Need a Humanity to graduate and found this class. Here's the slate:

Dark Knight
Rear Window
The Conversation
Zero Dark Thirty
Persepolis
Ex Machina
Inside Man
CitizenFour
Season 1 of The Wire
Fruitvale Station (Ryan Coogler)

What a slate! This teacher must know his shite. Only 1 dud on the list.

I haven't seen Persepolis, Fruitvale, or The Conversation, though. Thoughts?

WTF... why wasn't this available when I was at LSU

Also, who's your professor for this?

Which film do you view as the dud?

Maciak.

I watched Ex Machina for the 5th time last night, so I was simultaneously excited and sad to see it on the list

I'd be shocked if Revenant tops it as best of 2015 (hateful eight wasn't as good)

Maciak sounds familiar.

I still have a good bit of films to catch up on from 2015. But the only one that comes close to Ex Machina at the moment is Mad Max.

Conversation is amazing. Frutivale is interesting. It doesn't entirely work, but I do like that they use the actual cell phone footage of the inciting incident, and built the drama off of that.

I need to give that one a second watch. I was pretty meh on it. I had really high expectations going into it though.

it is not bad but I just was expecting something different

I took a lot of BS course at LSU, I wish this was on of them.

That is quite a list. "The Conversation" is 1 of the 4 great movies Coppola directed. Awesome movie. Like DePalma's "Blow Out", it pays homage to Michelangelo Antonioni's classic "Blow Up". Highly recommend checking out the other two if you watch "The Conversation".

It doesn't.

ETA: I almost took this class or a similar one before I graduated. Really wish I would have.

I liked how Fruitvale built. You know what's coming at the end, so it just makes everything happen leading up to it feel heavy. You really feel the weight of what happened.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed by The Conversation. It seemed like Coppola took a stage play and stretched it out to movie length.

Who's teaching the course?

I took a class my senior year called "the hero's journey through film". Awesome class. From what I recall, we were required to watch the following:

Star Wars original trilogy
Big Lebowski
Pulp Fiction
Taxi Driver
2001: A Space Odyssey

Several others I can't recall... All I know is writing an essay on the dude was my all time favorite assignment in college.

I haven't seen Persepolis, but I did read the graphic novel. From the previews I remember, it seemed like they just animated the book to go from panel to panel. It wasn't anything great, but it did give an interesting in sight into life in Iran before and after the Islamic Revolution and Iran-Iraq War

How do kids nowadays get these movies for a class? I guess Netflix, but if they're not available? Do the teachers expect you to purchase the movies? Back in my day, we would just go to the local Blockbuster.

Fruitvale Station has to be one of the most overrated, overly-slobbered upon movies to come out this decade.

It's just a mediocre film done well. Not very interesting or entertaining.

Watched the opening sequence of the Conversation in a film class and subsequently found it on Netflix. Really, really enjoyed it. One of my favorites I've seen on Netflix.

There is something to be said about how present that movie is. Very much a reflection of current mode in American culture. Regardless of where stand
