According to Mark Hamil they were seriously thinking about doing this in the OT but ultimately decided against it.

I think you misread that

Hamil was pleading the writers to make him evil for the new trilogy, because he wanted to be a villain. But that's not happening either

I don't think they were ever planning on him being evil in the OT

Yea you are right, it was Hamil that wanted Luke to go to the darkside, thinking that's where they were headed. Sitting there with JJ saying he "pitched it to George" basically implying Lucas didn't want it going that way.

This to me even makes it more plausible now, especially as he calls it what would have been his "pivotal moment"

quote:

“I pitched that to George,” Hamill responded. “As an actor, that would be more fun to play. I thought that was where it was going. I thought that would be my pivotal moment – I’ll have to come back, but I thought it would be, I have Han Solo in my crosshairs, and I’m about to kill him, or about to kill the Princess, about to kill somebody that we care about. You know, it’s an old cornball movie.”

I could see this trilogy centered around Luke (maybe even killing Han), going to the edge, then turning back at the very end with the help of the new cast.

That's the exact plot of the the OT. He's not gonna be evil.

I've floated this theory a few times, but no one has engaged me on it because I keep hitting Force Awakens threads as they are dying.

Luke was the one from the prophecy to bring balance to the force. Except he killed the Emperor, and turned Vader good. That isn't balance. The force is only on the good side.

What if Luke has figured out how to use both sides of the force without being corrupted by the dark side. Truly bringing BALANCE to the force? People think he has gone mad, because he is in communication with the force ghosts of Qui Gon, Obi Wan, Yoda, and Anakin. Others can't see them, so it looks like he is talking to himself. So that, in combination with the fact he doesn't want anyone else learning the secret of balancing the force, has forced him into seclusion.

The reason he isn't shown is because the parts of the movie he is in, if shown in the trailer, would reveal huge spoilers. It is really that simple.

They keep saying that the trilogies all mirror each other and are cyclical. Not that far-fetched.

VaBamaMan, that is a great theory and the most plausible IMO, people just don't engage bc they are like:

ZOMG!@ Luke going Evil would RUIN STAR WARS.

It's stupid. People would have said that if we saw anakin before his shift to Vader.

I'm absolutely fine with that, and wouldn't be surprised if either Snoke or Kylo was once Luke's apprentice.

That's actually not a bad theory. And there were tons of reports recently that Yoda is rumored to be in the film.

I think it is. The simplest answer is typically the correct one.
quote:

We see Kylo with his mask off (Driver) about to duel with Finn, but that doesn't make him the guy IN the mask. He could be Darth Luke's apprentice.

Also, say that he IS the same guy in the mask, this still doesn't mean that it's not Luke and the guy we see fighting Finn is a wannabe trying to follow in Luke/Vader's footsteps light a fan boy.

I have no idea what you're trying to say here.

quote:

Combine that with the round table discussion in 2005 with JJ Abrams and Mark Hamil it's not so far fetched.

No one has answered why Luke would put together that crude crappy lightsaber and how it doesn't completely shite all over his arc in the original trilogy.

So the exact same arc as Darth Vader. This is just awful, especially Luke killing Han. There's no way he's Kylo Ren and highly unlikely he is Snoke, although he may have a major connection to either of them.

That the Driver character with his mask off might not be the same guy in the mask

You said it brother.

In all fairness, most people have been saying for a good 10 years that his shift to the dark side was stupid. The Emperor was nothing more than a snake oil salesman to Anakin, and he was dumb enough to buy the Emperor's bullshite in the name of love. He wasn't seduced by power or the Dark Side, which OT Vader is clearly obsessed with.

This is needlessly complicated. This isn't Scooby Doo we're talking about. Kylo Ren as a whole is played by Adam Driver. Have you seen Mark Hamill recently? He clearly no longer has that body type.

I can picture it now! Mark Hamil as Evil Luke Skywalker, right Batsy?

Luke were to go bad, he would have done it in the original trilogy. Luke going bad now is just insulting.

The only thing that might give this theory even just a little bit of steam is that Kasdan was the chief writer of Episode VII and he desperately wanted Luke to turn in ROTJ.

I'm still of the belief that Ren is trying to finish the work his grandfather started. And the redemption will be that of a son that has gone to the dark side. My guess is he is Han and leia's child. Luke will once again be called upon to redeem someone. This will be the story going forward

His mental state has been deteriorated and corrupted by the Dark side.

And yes, I mentioned it in this thread already
