Any guesses on what Han did to Kylo to make him so mad? The only thing I can think of is he felt like his parents abandoned him by essentially sending him off to boarding school. That or he was too busy being a pirate and was an absentee father.

Personally I think he always saw his parents as weak. He despised his father for pretty much being the least Force sensitive person in the Galaxy, he hated his mother for refuses to embrace her Force powers, and he hated Luke for not joining with Vader and cowering from power. He sees them as weak and not taking what was rightfully theirs, so Kylo has put it upon himself to do such.

and has little understanding of the Force itself.

I just...don't buy this. He may still be raw with respect to his abilities, but I don't think he lacks an understanding of the Force or how to use it...

- He Force freezes numerous individuals with ease.
- He effortlessly suspends a blaster beam in mid air.
- He can inflict massive amounts of pain to torture victims.
- He has telepathic abilities that already mimic Vader.
- He's able to render Rey unconscious with a burst of the Force within a few milliseconds.
- He pulls entire human beings towards him with ease, while also launching human beings away from him with ease.

Raw, unrefined, crude...are all apt descriptions for Kylo and his abilities, but I simply don't think you can perform the abilities listed above with "little understanding of the Force."

Who thought a soccer ball with a head would be a good idea for a drone? How is BB-8 meant to navigate the uneven terrains of all the planets in the galaxy? Or stairs for that matter?

And I really want to emphasize this: the three minutes we meet Rey are better than anything in the prequels combined. Not a single word is said and it tells you everything you need to know about her character. She's just fantastic.

I just remember watching it, liking the sledding down the hill, then she's relentlessly cleaning up small parts, getting ripped off, and she has a happy outlook regardless. Then we see her hanging out having dinner, and we realize she's alone and she's been entirely abandoned. But then she goes out with her happy quirky personality and enjoys a pathetic meal at the base of an AT-AT....

.... Wait a moment, do I actually care for this character? Holy shite, I actually fricking care if something good or bad happens to this person! Gone are the days of me having indifference as someone burns alive or a dickhead teacher loses his student. That sequence was brilliantly done, and if I have to point to a single scene in this movie that was missing in the prequels, this is the definitive scene.

Whoever built the Death Star 2.0 should have learned from past experience. It was basically destroyed in a similar fashion to its predecessor. Way too easy.

Yeah and that hyper speed penetration of the shield would seem like a pretty ridiculous vulnerability if it didn't take exceptional timing to pull it off.

That's a very small portion of the Force. Yes, Kylo has raw power, but he also has absolutely no control over his emotions. Both the Jedi and the Sith strongly emphasize this in their training. This is where Kylo Ren lacks and he has no composure whatsoever. Vader completely had this composure. Kylo is mentally weak, and he knows it. He has not been trained whatsoever on how to handle these emotions and this is highly important to becoming a true powerful user of the Force.

The most powerful Force users know how to control their emotions, and that is what overcomes their enemies. This is explicitly stated in Rey and Kylo's duel. It's when Rey gains the upper hand is when she gains control over her emotions. Kylo has never had control over them, so he loses easily to her. Snoke will teach him this though, so he'll become much more lethal as the series progresses.

It was Death Star 3.0 and it really was only vaguely like the other 2.

I guess, only inasmuch as it was an enormous, laser-emitting, planet-destroying sphere used by the Dark Side.

I think they gave a good indication of why Ren may feel the way he did about Han. Leia and Han talked about how they fight and how Han left. It's most likely that Ren is upset for Han abandoning him and his mother.

This movie was awesome and reignited the star wars awesomeness.

I thought it was worthy of the original trilogy. I was very pleasantly surprised.

I mean in the way it was destroyed.

So is Poe strong with the force too...he's a pretty bad arse pilot. Do we find out he and Rey are related somehow? I think this movie will just get better, once some of the questions are answered. It's probably full of clues we don't understand yet.

I'm still holding out hope that Snoke is merely a puppet for the Sith Master.

Luke Skywalker. That'd be priceless.

I've determined I can't truly rank this movie until the next movie clarifies the obvious questions in the plot. If those questions, discussed ad nasuem in this thread, are addressed in a meaningful way that moves along the overall plot of the trilogy in a logical way then this movie ranks right under empire. If the next movie ignores these odd details (like Rey being shown as a stronger Jedi on screen than Luke in the OT with literally no training) and just uses the "just because" cop out then it ranks right above episode III (not in the prequel tier but also not in the OT tier)

My point is there was too much unsaid in this movie to properly appreciate it on its own. If I had to rank it RIGHT NOW based solely on what was on screen in this movie I'd put it in the OT tier somewhere around ROTJ (maybe lower).

Users of the dark side are not practitioners of this at all.

Yeah they are. They purge positive emotion, such a sympathy, kindness, and tranquility. They do not put up with such mindsets. They only want focus, passion, and anger. Kylo on the other hand has some form of a conscience, something that is not good for being a dark side user. He has very little focus and just bounces off the wall. The Sith highly emphasize emotionally state, and being unstable isn't really one of them.

I saw the movie again tonight and have softened on some of my initial criticism. Still not sure it's OT level but if not it's very close.
