Yes, a Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice.

-Yoda

Her powers first emerged from fear and anger, when Kylo was in her head. Then erupted when she felt hate towards Him, after having just killed Han, and maybe Finn. She would have gladly killed him if the ground hadn't split, and woke her out of it.

I also don't think she called the lightsaber to her, I think the force did that on its own.

I'm not saying she will go to the darkside, but it was kinda obvious why she progressed so quickly.

I didn't hear him, I think the consensus is that the other voice was Ewan McGregor's. I think they want to use him as Obi-Wan's force ghost moving foward.

Ewan McGregor, Alec Guinness, and Frank Oz all lent their voices to that scene. J.J. Abrams even confirms that Yoda was in that scene in the like below:

quote:

Abrams also confirmed that some iconic actors reprised their roles: Ewan McGregor, Frank Oz… and a clever editing movie also brought the late Alec Guinness, who died in 2000 at the age of 86, back to the Star Wars universe.

“The idea of the voices was, we wanted the audience to feel – but not necessarily be presented right in your face — this idea that familiar, Force-strong voices were connecting with her. At least as well as they could,” Abrams says.

Her powers actually first emerged when the Force began calling to her. We all realized exactly what she was when she touched the lightsaber for the first time.

Or maybe during her amazing flight aboard the Falcon. She told Finn she had no idea how she did it.

Those weren't her powers, that was the force itself feeding her.

She didn't understand how it worked in the slightest till Kylo entered her mind.

I only heard the two, but that whole thing was so chaotic it was hard to tell. I couldn't even tell what Ewan said.

Only one I heard for sure was Sir Alec.

They actually used Alec Guiness' voice to say "Rey" (took it from him saying "afraid" in the OT) and McGregor's voice to say "these are your first steps." And Yoda is in there too. LINK

For decades we've had it pounded into us how use of the force has to be trained. Abrams peed all over that in 15 minutes of footage. One of the worse parts of the movie.

No. Not it at all.

For decades it's been pounded into us that Jedi have to be trained.

But the dark side is the quick and easy way to power in the force. Led to by fear, anger, aggression, and hate. All of which she displayed when she erupted.

This movie was consistent with that.

But she knew the Force resided within her at that moment - thus becoming aware of her powers for the first time. That's how she knew she could keep Kylo Ren out of her mind.

Not at all. At the beginning of the fight she displayed anger and aggression as she was the one to make the first move. Her fear was on display as she was fighting while retreating away from Kylo Ren. Before she exploded on Kylo Ren she became at peace with herself and her surroundings as she drew strength from the Force. She was using the light side in the final part of that fight.

The film left more than a few hints that Rey had been previously trained as a Jedi.

Or do you think that Ren's line about an ocean surrounding an island while he was reading her mind was just a throw away line?

She simply focused to find it. She handnt even thought about using it till then. Look at her face dude, she acted that whole movie incredibly for a rookie, and the anger, hate, and rage on her face was just on accident? I thought she looked MORE angry after searching for the force. Whereas previously she looked more fearful, but determined in the fight.

She has probably been previously trained, though young. But I don't think you can argue she didn't use the easy way to the force.

What does that have to with her having been trained? Once it was pointed out to me, I took it more as him pointing out what she thought was imagination. But was meant to show us that either she had the power to glimpses of memories from those whom she concentrates on, akin to Ren's power, or Luke was sending her images as a means to sooth and comfort her.

Because the full statement matters here. I went back and watched it on Kodi to hear the full line.

"Lonely, unable to sleep at night. You imagine an ocean, I see it, I see the island."

Either she was so lonely she unknowingly reached out for whom she wanted most, or Luke sent her the image to comfort her. Maybe even to give her a hint of what to hunt for.

Or, the more likely scenario, she was one the kids trained by Luke before Ren went rogue and started killing them all and in order to protect her, Luke stashed her away on Jakku and erased her memory. It also explains why she has no memory of anything prior to seeing the ship that dropped her off leaving Jakku.

The island surrounded by an ocean isn't her imagination, it's a subconscious memory.

Also, there is an interesting scene when they first get to Maz's, Rey comments that she didn't know there was this much green in the whole universe. When she says it, Han has this look of almost guilt.

I loved the movie. It felt a little too familiar but I liked it. I didn't like how Flinn could hold off a trained jedi. I might have been mistaken but I thought only people who can control the force use lightsabers. Hans son looks like a rebellious young teenager Manson.

Can someone explain the stormtroopers? I thought they were all clones. Why was there a female captain?

Who is this new villan? He came out of nowhere.

They apparently switched from using clones to drafting and brainwashing kids. Think Kurt Russel's Soldier.

This happen in the OT, though.
