The trilogy that Rian is supposed to be doing will be a fricking dumpster fire.

It’s gone down 77% in a week. That trilogy will never come to fruition.

Can anyone confirm what I think I saw? At the end on the Falcon when Finn is rummaging through a storage bin the Jedi texts are stored in there. It appears that Rey saved the ancient texts so wtf was the point of Luke trying to set the tree on fire?

HOW DID THE REBELS LOSE?

they don't even talk about this huge upset and bad governance

Agree...they do say the First Order rose from the remnants of the Empire. I can buy that. But they also say the Resistance is a group that is supported by the Republic. Well, why doesn't the Republic send its whole army in to help fight the First Order? Did they disband their army in the New Republic. It's just a poorly told story.

it's not just the Rebels/Republic, though

how in the frick did the Empire/First Order afford and make all those ships? how did the Republic allow it?

this problem isn't really RJ/TLJ's problem. JJ fricked this trilogy from the get-go by remaking ANH last time

Doesn’t Poe say he is Commander from the New Republic or something along those lines? That would lead me to believe the New Republic is completely failed and the “resistance” is all that’s left of it.

I’ve been watching the Clone Wars cartoon lately. The resistance ships look very much like the Seperatist ships from that timeframe. Why would that be? The Raddus looks exactly like a Providence class dreadnaught from the Seperatists / Trade Federation.

Also I think the bulk of their ships are leftover from the Empire.

My parents and sister are arguing with me that it’s revealed in TFA that Rey is revealed to be Luke’s daughter.

I still don't understand the tone of the movie at the end

The resistance is depleted
Nobody out there wants to help you
And Luke, the strongest Jedi, just died

WHY IS EVERYBODY SO CHIPPER

i really don't get the parents angle

the first movie starts with her being some loner

then as she gets more competent and things get more complex/confusing, it becomes this big deal

then in this movie, they make it a big deal...only to have her know the whole time she's just galaxy trash

what in the frick?

I agree. That was the main problem I had with TFA. I figured we'd get an answer to those questions in TLJ when we found out more about Snoke.

And yeah, just watched the end. That movie ruined that epic end. Yeah, that’s definitely what JJ was aiming for was Luke throwing the lightsaber over his shoulder. I openly raged in front of them “why didn’t he direct the next one?!” Just awful.

JJ and Rian had to have different thoughts about what they wanted to do with the parents story. No way JJ makes that big of a deal about it, even including it in the lightsaber flashback scene (arguably the most interesting part of TFA) if he intended the answer to be "she's just the daughter of some drunk nobodies." I think Rian just changed it. I guess it's also still possible that Kylo was fricking with her when he revealed it to her.

that would work if he hadn't said "you've always know it" and she agrees with him

Luke's face at the end of TFA was definitely "let me toss this lightsaber that I haven't held since I actually had a right hand over this cliff and walk down the hill and get some hippo cow milk." I would have loved to have seen Abram's face when he first read the continuation of that scene.

Minorities and women are in charge. Their civilization is in ruins and there are only a handful of them left, but damnit they are diverse!

I discussed this with my son, who's college-age and can impart some of that generation's input on it.

Incidently, we both also like old surplus firearms, and he likes various period-specific historical war games.

The First Order seems to have new(er) ships. They look evolved from the earlier Imperial ships, but I haven't seen a true Star Destroyer from around the OT period. Their Ties also look newer and evolved.

The Resistance had Ackbar's cruiser, which would be at least 35 yrs old, if it were brand new in Return of the Jedi. They seemed to have the same medical frigate the Rebellion used, and a lot of the other craft were similarly old. In short, they had old surplus craft ready for mothballs, facing a modern fleet with far superior numbers and larger capital ships. Recipe for disaster.

Poe's X Wing squadron was the lone exception, those looked new. But he identified himself as a New Republic commander, which easily could be the exact truth- an all-volunteer squadron "on loan" from the Republic, like the Flying Tigers AVG in China.

Hell, I wish they would have made that an open and obvious part of the script; it would have made Poe's actions far more understandable, and it would have legitimized the command-level conflict and power struggle:
Poe- Hey, I'm here to help you, but you aren't my boss. These are MY birds. And right now, they're the only thing keeping your arse alive. We own the skies out there, and I want to make them pay for their attack on my people. I'm New Republic, and we're at war with these bastards now. Not resisting, WAR.

Leia and Purple- Poe, you don't HAVE a boss anymore, you're either on your own, or with us. And we supply the fuel for your birds, and the base for your missions.
And this is MY Resistance, under MY lead. You either stay and follow my commands, or you're welcome to go back to the asteroid field that used to be your base. Got it?

I really think Rian took all of JJ’s notes and then proceeded to do the exact opposite. Rian in his Syndrome like mind “Oh they want different?! How about I make a purple haired gender studies professor be the head of the Resistance? How about I go all PETA and have a message against horse breeders and jockeys? How about I undermine that epic ending scene where Luke throws the lightsaber over his shoulder? They’re going to get different all right.” I think all he used were the setting Abrams had in mind, and that’s fricking it.
