I don't see how this makes much sense considering how they smartly handled PSVue and got out because they saw it wouldn't work. Is Paramount+ Sony's library really a critical mass of content that will justify people having another subscription? I don't think so.

Who says they'll keep Paramount+? Maybe the move is to get rid of it and lease all of their content. Paramount has some big properties in Transformers, Mission Impossible, TMNT, Spongebob, and all the Nickelodeon stuff. There's money to be made with all that.

Out of curiosity, why didn't PSVue work?

Wasn't it basically what Youtube TV, Fubo, Hulu live, etc. are now?

Because of the name

Internet cable streaming was just becoming big. Sling TV, DirecTV Stream, YTTV, etc were all ramping up. And here’s PS Vue with arguably the best product and they decided to put PlayStation in the name. Sony Vue would be a thing today if they weren’t so stupid.

You can’t put an exclusive name like that in a subscription service. People legitimately thought you needed a PlayStation to use the service

When is the DOJ going to start actually doing their job? All these mega mergers and acquisitions need to get shut down with a quickness

Not sure, I had it for over a year and their interface was the best at the time by a country mile. I was sad to see it go. Been on YTTV since.

Unlike Disney and Google, Sony was not going to keep operating it at a loss.

The rights to acquire the channels from Disney etc, was going to push the monthly rate down on subscribers to over 100/mo. Unlike Google who will operate it at a loss or Disney who owns the content, they had no avenue forward

But we all knew this was going to start happening at some point, didn't we? Having all of these myriad of competing streaming services with content spread all over the universe was never going to be sustainable. Eventually, there's going to be one or two, maaaybe three big players that are basically 80% of the market. And along with those, a few smaller players that have a got a model that allows them to stay in that part of the business. Everybody else will have been swallowed up by these survivors, or just vanished into the historical ether. I somehow doubt the DOJ is going to get involved.

Honestly, I didn't realize that wasn't the case until you pointed it out just now. I'm actually surprised. I figured their whole strategy was to use the Playstation as a vehicle for that service, perhaps one day making it mainstream. Talk about a marketing mistake!

As a Paramount+ subscriber, I'm ok with this as long as we get whole Sony library dropped in as well. That would be a nice big boost. I even would be fine with the deal not quite going through, but the result being some sort of Sony Library/Paramount+ fusion for streaming only.
