As someone who has watched this show religiously for the last 10 years as the favorite show of mine, I am completely satisfied with that ending. I wanted it to pay homage, and sort of set up the next chapter in the Superman story, and it did it beautifully. Smallville is SMALLVILLE - not an early Superman show set in the DC Universe.

I really like this finale but, i Thought it was a little lame that Tom welling never really put the suit on. You only saw his head or CGI and the shirt at the end.

I thought the Darkseid encounter was really lame. Granted I hadn't watched a single episode of Smallville before tonight, but I was expecting something much more epic than the lame arse fight we got.

Hell, it wasn't even a fight. Clark just flew right into him, there was a bunch of black crap that flew everywhere, and - just like that - Darkseid was defeated.

The first hour or so really dragged on, thought the script could have been better...perhaps Lex could've been resurrected sooner and created havoc.

But the last 5 minutes were fantastic.

Fitting end to the show and a great setup for the new movie.

Did we really have to hear their vows... TWICE??

I agree with the disappointment in the Darkseid fight and there being no full-suit pose. Welling wearing the suit is what the series has been building up to for 10 years and they decided to half-arse it by CGI'ing him at a distance.

I loved the episode. Agree that they didn't need for them to do the vows over again especially since the 1st time was such a good scene. Rosenbaum being back was great even if he only had a little screen time. He's my favorite Lex, everyone else's has come off as fearful in the face of Superman/Clark but his Lex never came off this way.

I agree for the most part. I expected more action, but they did a nice job tying the past to the present and sending Clark off to be Superman.

I watched season one and part of season two, but I grew tired of the monster of the week stuff. Is the entire run of the show like that, or do they eventually move on? I've been contemplating starting back up and finishing the series. Is it worth it?

I guess 'worth it' depends on your point of view and what you enjoy. Smallville follows the typical serial format which has a weekly story (monster or villain(s) of the week), while continuing the season and series story arc. I enjoy the hero journey myth, and in this story watching Clark grow from a typical selfish teenager into a responsible adult...except he has powers. I especially enjoyed the way the writers/producers handled the light vs dark relationship between Clark and Lex.

In Smallville, Lex is never a silly caricature of the evil genius villain. Smallville's Lex is someone you can actually identify with and even agree with sometimes, a sometimes sympathetic character who is lost and trying to find his way from under his father's oppressive thumb. Lex is what hooked me on the show. I was glad they brought him back for the finale.

great ending!!! sad to see this show go. even with the shitty dialog the mythology and journey to becoming superman has been well worth the time spent watching this show. darkseid fight was weak but i guess when your fricking superman some black smoke aint gonna get in your way and apparently neither is a planet. loved the tess lex interaction and her being able to wipe his mind of everything he knew. well done finale the flashbacks of the journey for both clark and lex were a nice touch

suprised we didnt get some justice league cameos in the finale. the supposed legion of doom was fricking weak

Last 5-10 minutes of show were great, everything else fell kind of short in my eyes.

SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T WATCHED SERIES

Didn't Jimmy Olsen get killed by Doomsday a couple seasons back? Did they just forget about that when they showed the 7 year flashforward at the end or did I miss something?

You missed something. One of Lois' lines was "make your brother proud".

Smallville ended exactly how I wanted it to. We got to see him fly, we got the suit and we got the original score to end the show. Awesome, awesome, awesome! I knew they would deliver though. They always have had the best season finales of any show so it made sense that the series finale would be great.

I knew they wouldn't show him in the full suit, in a close up. Think about it....Warner Bros has a lot riding on the Superman reboot coming out next year (starring Henry Cavill), and they probably didn't want the lasting image of Superman to be Tom Welling in the suit.

Apparently Entertainment Weekly agrees with me LINK

I loved the suit, and I loved that Clark put it on…and I even loved that we never really got a good full-body shot. You may disagree, but it was probably for the best that Smallville made us use our imaginations to seal the deal on that visual. Besides, I loved those longshot/widescreen vistas of Superman flying through sky and saving Lois’ plane from threatening turbulence and then tackling Darkseid’s planetary dirty bomb. For anyone bummed we didn’t get The Full (Spandex) Monty, newsflash: I hear there’s a movie in the works. In fact, I even wonder if Warner Bros. wanted Smallville to play a little coy with the suit in order to prime the pump for the big screen reveal next year.
