The scene where the dude was fricking his wife and saw Reese's face cracked me up. Also had the same exact furniture in the Teacher's Lounge in my mom's home. We bought it from the Nebraska Furniture Mart.

The scene where Giamattie realizes he just let it slip that his buddy was getting married. That "oh f&&%" look is priceless and is the high point of the movie.

I watched Election back in the day, and haven't been motivated to watch it since.

I've watched Sideways a dozen times at least. Great movie.

Who's likeable in Sideways?

The chicks suck. And the guys are losers who steal from family and they're funny only to themselves.

This is the main reason I hated it. I am always surprised when I see anything positive written about this movie.

Sideways is probably my favorite film of all time and imo is basically perfect.

It's also what inspired me to start making films

While my personal pick is Sideways, they're both great movies. Arguing one over the other is just mental masturbation (hey, someone else mentioned it earlier, so...)

That long soliloquy Miles had on Pinot Noir in that scene where Virginia Madsen said "...and it tastes so fricking good" actually caused a spike in Pinot Noir sales which lasted for years, and his disparaging of Merlots caused a temporary decrease in sales of that wine.

Descendants is very good
About Schmidt is good
Downsizing is better than my admittedly very low expectations. There are some very funny moments.
Haven't seen Nebraska.

I enjoy both movies but I do prefer Election.

Sideways the book is much better and flush the characters out much more because I agree they are pretty shallow in the film.

The music and soundtrack of sideways is also painfully outdated imo, makes it much less enjoyable on rewatch compared to when it came out. Hasn’t aged well at all.

Election is dark but still as good as it was back then.

It’s polarizing by nature, given the subject matter, but Citizen Ruth is his debut film and is great imo.

The most telling line in Sideways:

Miles: "I'll take a Barely Legal, please."

(Cashier grabs a magazine.)

Miles: "Uh, no, the new one."

Kind of an odd comment. It's all jazz tunes, and was meant as kind of an homage to some Italian movies from the 1950s and 1960s. In many ways the music was "outdated" when the movie come out in 2004.

the actual book is pretty dogshit honestly as a narrative. It's a mess

it's jazz/bossa nova

it was already "outdated" in 2004

yea it helps show that Jack and Miles are the same even though Miles is in denial about it
