I've stated my disdain for it before, decided to give it another chance. Still don't like it. Glacial pace, characters were not believable.

Not every movie can be "From Justin to Kelly".

They just didn't sell me on being hardened convicts, even Morgan Freeman, whom I like in just about everything else he's done. I should also admit here that I just don't like Stephen King's storytelling. He seems a decent guy and I'd probably like to have a beer with him. But I don't care for his style or the way it translates to the screen.

He wasn't a hardened criminal. He didn't have to be.

BTW, this has the best ending to a movie ever.

These were criminals in a prison in Maine. In the mid 20th century, no less. These aren't the hardcore peices of shite you see patrolling the streets of North BR or NOLA. I think it's 100% believable.

Agree completely. Andy's group of friends seemed like the quasi-gay group of guys that hang out in those enlarged prostate commercials and ride bikes and hike together - just a little too touchy-feely to be believable.

No, that group was The Sisters.

I like the ending because that is a beach on St. Croix that I used to hang out on some and dive wrecks off of. Still looks exactly the same.

I think The Green Mile would give it a run for its money as for "best ending."

Don't get me wrong, I still like the movie - but the "criminals" in the movie are painfully unrealistic

I can't think of the name of the drug, but it's a commercial for a drug that cures pissing too often - it shows a group of guys doing a bunch of activities together - riding bikes, going to ball games, throwing a football together, laughing and constantly slapping each other on the back - they look a little "closer" than my group of friends do...

"It's not that I dislike the film per se, it's just that I'm homophobic to an utterly comical degree."

You talking about that drug for guys with enlarged prostates? How the hell did you tie that into Shawshank Redemption?

Wrangler and Dockers commercials are dangerously close to presenting the same picture.

No, big fan of Lebowski.
It's an embarrassment to Coen movies. Shaw shank is pure awesomeness, and I don't even like the lead actor.

Not at all, I couldn't care less if they're gay. I just find it to be terribly unrealistic. I watch "Lockup" on MSNBC, so I think I know what I'm talking about, fella

I wouldn't piss on Morgan Freeman or Tim Robbins if either of them were on fire and I still enjoyed the movie. Had to be pretty good for me to overcome my dislike of these two gentlemen.

Both are prominent liberal activists. I'm assuming it's a political thing. Or maybe he really hates the Electric Company (Freeman) and NY Ranger fans (Robbins).
