Was just checking the map, Andy made that drive about 9 hours longer than it needed to be. Should have crossed at Brownsville or Laredo.

On the maps thing:
Red was pretty much an assistant librarian. While I could understand prisons not keeping maps and atlases around escape hungry convicts, Red would be familiar enough with libraries to get his questions answered there once he was on parole.
As for the availability of maps to the public, every gas station had maps to surrounding states as well as your region of the country and usually a general U.S. map that would get you down to McNary Texas.

Unless they specifically spoke of it and Andy said “Dude, make sure you remember this town Zihuatanejo for later,” it almost seems kinda a flippant move by him. Like “if he makes it cool, if not no big deal.”

Probably don’t want to write down “hey I am escaped inmate, here is where to find me”
Also, red thought Andy, his oldest and closest friend, was going to hang himself and those were his last words to him.
Then he finds out he escape from prison hour later. Red is only person in the world to know vaguely where he went, that’s a secret your forget.

I read the Stephen King novella. Short story at only 120 pages and is paced really well for a King novel. Honestly it’s one of Kings greatest achievements.

Is there any fiction set in Maine not written by Stephen King other than Murder She Wrote

I read.

Red said Andy crawled 500 yards, just shy of half a mile. Half a mile is 880 yards. Ruined the whole movie.

How did that rock break that steal sewage pipe?

Being that folding paper maps were THE way to navigate and almost every gas station would have sold them, it is clear how easily they were to come by. How old are you sport? 20?
Well, I guess you and I disagree that “almost every gas station” in rural Maine would have detailed maps of Mexico, champ.

Except, that's clearly not what happened in the movie. This is the day of his escape later that night. At this point Andy has decided he's going to try his escape, and it's the last time he'll talk to Red. This is clearly the first time he's mentioned any of this to Red. Shortly after this, if I'm not mistaken, Red is at dinner with the fellas telling them that Andy had been acting squirrelly and he was worried he was going to kill himself in his cell that night. Andy wasn't there because he was still in the warden's office doing the books. Andy leaves directly from there to his cell.
This conversation is literally the last words Andy tells Red in prison and the first time he's told him anything about Zihuatanejo or the field.

Honestly...given what Red suggests, that he thought it was Andy alluding to killing himself later, I'm surprised he remembered any of those details.

That used to bother me. But he was a rock expert and would’ve known what rocks would have been hard and strong enough to break that pipe. That’s how I always straightened that out.

Andy Dufrene escaped in 1966 with 370,000 of the Wardens Money.
That is equievelent to 3.7 Million today.

Adjusted for inflation, $370,000 in 1966 is equal to $3,770,440 in 2026.
Annual inflation over this period was 3.94%.
