Sean Connery would have made $450 million for 3 pictures had he agreed to play Gandalf

He was offered 15% of the gross. Has any actor ended up losing more money by saying no?

Not sure if it would have gotten close to that total but didn't Will Smith famously turn down playing Morpheus or Neo in The Matrix to star in Wild Wild West or something?

Ya, but he also explained it with some humor in an interview.

Basically, it wasn't an obvious hit by reading the plot/script.

It wouldn't have been with him in it either.

Probably true. Worked out for the best.

Saying yes to League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which was what made him say “frick it, I retire”, was directly due to passing on LOTR and another project which succeeded (Matrix?) because he didn’t get them.

He had the same feeling with League and figured he better sign on this time. Oops.

Like that time Tim Roth passed on playing Snape in Harry Potter to do Tim Burton's shitty Planet of the Apes remake.

What role would Connery have played in Matrix?
Morpheus?

According to a web search, he was offered Morpheus in the first film and The Architect in the sequels and passed both times.

I think Connery would've been very bad casting for Gandolf.

Ian was perfect for the role.

I also think movies like LOTR benefit greatly from not having anyone cast with the star power of Connery. Don't get me wrong, many of the cast already had respectable acting careers but none of them (at the time the 1st LOTR came out) had the star power that Connery would have had. Somehow the relative anonymity of the cast to main stream audiences I think added to its appeal. I suppose a major exception would be Ian but only because he had just been in X-Men the year prior and Hugo Weaving for the Matrix in 1999.

For me personally the most recognizable going into 2001 would've been Sam for starring in The Goonies and Rudy.

ETA: Again, I guess the point I'm making is that plenty had success pre-LOTR, but I don't think any had some big 'A-list, widely recognized name' to mainstream moviegoers.

Sean Astin only made 250k for three films for comparison and he had a decent career at that point.

I’m guessing Liv Tyler and Cate Blanchet were the two most recognizable besides Magneto and Rudy. Everybody probably recognized Sean Bean but didn’t know his name. I had never even heard of Viggo until LOTR.

Playing second fiddle to the dude made famous by Bill and Ted at that point in his career was probably the deal breaker.

Considering the amount of time he spent making those movies that is not a lot of cash. Granted he's filthy rich off his residuals at this point but it goes to show that B and C list actors are often not making that much more then the average Joe.

Bruce Campbell was talking about his salary for Army of Darkness being around 100 grand. Which sounds pretty nice. But it was over two years where he didn't have many other projects going and he was going through a divorce at the time. So he was making about 25 grand a year before taxes (and paying taxes on 50 grand of it).

When Army of Darkness finished its wrap party he went right back to work... as a security guard.

You can see where the phrase "I'm an overnight success, twenty years in the making" came from for actors.

If true, both movies were better because of it.

I knew Elijah before these movies thanks to Radio Flyer and Forever Young.
