Looking back, I don't see how I missed it, but the reveal at the end of Angel Heart freaked me out pretty hard when I was 15 or so. Plus, Lisa Bonet had sex with a chicken.

"Re-Animator" (1985) got my attention many years ago.

Don't remember a lot about it other than being scared. Of course I was 8 or 9 when I saw it.

I live out in the country and rather secluded. The Strangers is the reason that a knock on my door that late at night will be answered with gun in hand.

A Dozen Scarys that I liked:
(My top 7 scariest...)
The Exorcist
Jaws
Psycho
Halloween (the original)
Alien
The Blob (original)
Horror of Dracula (Hammer)

Next in line...
Curse of the Demon
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1950s)
The Uninvited (1944)
Angel Heart
The Possession of Joel Delaney

I agree with this. I watched it with my dad when I was a LITTLE kid....under 8 years old for sure. If he was still alive I would ask him what the hell he was thinking!

The Strangers

hate to ruin it for you, but this movie wasn't based on a true story. It was inspired by by events (break ins) but no actual murder ever happened as the movie projects.

love the Paranormal Activity Series

I can agree with pretty much any of the others listed in this thread, but I gotta disagree with this one. Paranormal Activity sucked, plain and simple. I took my 10-year old stepson to see it, and even HE said it sucked. And you know kids at that age, they like everything.

No matter how old I am, I may never be able to watch unsolved mysteries by myself. Just hearing the theme song is enough to make me get the heebie jeebies

I remember Burnt Offerings scaring the bejezzus out of me as a kid. Not so much as an adult.

This isn't a scary movie, just something that could have ended badly: I'm staying at a friend's house and our other roommate was there. We are about to go to bed when roomie #1 starts talking about ghosts and demonic possessions and how scary they are. I begin to fall asleep but something happens when I'm in that in-between state of awake and asleep. I look up and outlined by the window across the room is what I see to be a little girl looking down at me. I just see her silhouetted upper body and hair hanging around her face. My entire body freezes up and I gently call out to roomie #2 and she doesn't answer; I assume she is asleep. I call out to roomie #1 and she answers me. No noise came from the silhhouette. I start yelling out, "Holy s***! Holy s***!" plus some other colorful phrases. I kick the blankets off my legs about to roundhouse kick in the head whatever is standing over me when roomie #2 starts saying, "What is it?! What's the matter?!" Her voice came from the silhouette. Turns out she was kneeling beside the bed praying and that's why she didn't respond to me when I called her name to try and pinpoint where she was. And the moral of this story is not to tell ghost stories when you're halfway asleep or you will come very close to roundhouse kicking a friend in the head.
