At 11:30pm on October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television – and culture – forever. Directed by Jason Reitman and written by Gil Kenan & Reitman, Saturday Night is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. Full of humor, chaos, and the magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, we count down the minutes in real time until we hear those famous words…

This looks a bit stupid, probably over the top, but I trust that with Reitman it'll be a fun watch.

I can't believe they cast Lamorne Morris as Chevy Chase.

They nailed the Chevy casting based on looks, but apparently not based on anything else.

I'll give this a shot though, for sure.

Seems pointless and boring. I doubt there was really some grand story of overcoming great odds and drama. It was another sketch comedy series that was updated for modern audiences of the '70s since most of the comedy of that time was growing old and stale. I don't need to see a movie about that.

I don't recognize any names of actors playing the main parts. It looks like there are some big names making cameos though.

I am not sure if this is going to do well at all.

Chase, Belushi, Aykroyd, Murray are all still very well known in the public consciousness. And these clips and skits from the 70s are still well known. It's going to be shitty and uncanny watching these other people play them

Are we sure that's what is going to happen? The movie is about the 90 minutes before airing of the first show.

I doubt it's getting a wide release. Shame. If like to see it in theaters. It looks like a real-time/one night seettimg film, which I like.

found it online. that whole movie was nothing but chaos the entire time.

throughout the movie, it'll update you as to what the actual time is, and it's hard to believe how much actually takes place between 15-30 minutes. dramatized i'm sure.

it literally starts at 10pm and ends with the first sketch at 11:30pm, which we all know is the Wolverines sketch.

apparently, John Belushi didn't sign his contract until 5 minutes before the show started.

chevy chase also had an interesting interaction with milton berle before the show as well.

the guy that plays dan aykroyd was phenomenal.

Yeah that would be weird, but I can see it overcoming that if it is really good. It cost 25M and has grossed 4M over the weekend even though it opened earlier in select (i.e., liberal urban) theaters. I think the problem is that the story is just not that compelling especially when you consider how polarizing and shitty the actual SNL is now.

Didn’t know about a Chase-Berle interaction but one of the writers (Alan Zweibel?) apparently made some comment to Berle about how he had gotten into the business writing Borsch Belt jokes about Berle’s cock. Berle then decided to whip it out for him and someone opened the door then awkwardly closed it upon noticing what was going on.

I found it very compelling. And I love the crazy intensity that happens behind the scenes on opening night of a live production. I’m no professional actor, but I did several plays in my youth, and performing before a live audience is exhilarating, and the nerves, adrenaline, terror, and all the things is something that’s almost impossible to find anywhere else. Sports and live music shows/concerts are probably the only other equivalents.

Jesus Christ, you tiny dick snowflakes. I pondered SNL of the 2020s absolutely zero. It would have been a fun ride if they’d have changed the names of the show and characters. Although, I thought most of the actors were great, I thought the guy who played Chevy stood out as being funny and very much like what I assume a 1975 Chevy Chase would have been like, the guy who played Akroyd was good, the guy who played the head writer probably stole the show, and the 2 that played Lorne Michaels and his technical “wife” turned writer who was apparently banging Akroyd at the time was good too. The whole thing cast was great imo.

It’s not the best movie ever made, but I really enjoyed the frenetic pacing and the overall good time I had. I’d recommend it to normal people. But if you’re a miserable a-hole just looking to hate watch, it may not be for you. Or sadly, it may.
