how does the kid Mark link what's happening back to Barlow? I thought I was paying attention, but it seems I missed something crucial.
The kid who floated into his room said Master Barlow wants to meet you or something like that.

I didn’t really love the original book. So no skin off my back in terms of story or character. The big problem with this movie was in terms of creating a crafted experience. There are times when it was done very well. The abduction scene was beautiful. The vampires being creepy on rooftops was great.
But there was very little effort to consolidate everything into an active narrative. People just go and do things. Movies need to be active presentations and this just had people going through it and doing things.
For example, the cop pulls Ben over. Instead of just warning him to not cause trouble, he also mentions there have been too many new people in his town lately. Locals have been unruly about it because they feel their way of life is under attack. That at the very least builds mystery. Then…. BAM, after the first kidnapping, the locals just become more hostile.

Not good. Editing felt weird, like some parts were missing.

One thing about this movie, and I’ve seen it in a lot of movies of late, they just don’t do the period piece thing very well. They had this set in the 70’s and tried with the hair, clothes, music, etc., but I just didn’t feel that it worked.
This is something Stranger Things was great at. I lived in the 80’s and that show felt like it and had the vibe.
I lived in the 70’s, Salems Lot didn’t pull that off. Was like the movie was wearing a costume.
That said it wasn’t terrible.

It did manage to include all 4 black people that live in Maine.

lol everbody got crosses laying around
This was a big part I had trouble overlooking.
The scene where Father Callhan tells Barlow he’s a priest to which Barlow responds “Are you?”, causing him to lose faith and ultimately die, could have been a really cool moment. But for me it is overshadowed by the fact Mike gets saved early on by a random cross in the background of his room.
Does the cross have power against the vampires or is it faith in Christ through the cross that gives power against them?
I’m looking way too deeply into it, but it doesn’t make sense.

They taped two depressors together and it worked.

The cross effects were also just bad
