Rings of Power Review

I haven't watched Rings of Power but caught this review by the Federalists Nathaniel Blake. He really slams the program but explains why very well. If curious about Rings of Power, this review is worth reading.

This sort of failure is much worse throughout “The Rings of Power.” Almost no one behaves like an adult, even elves who are hundreds, or even thousands, of years old.

That the Amazon showrunners have shown no ability to appreciate, let alone develop, this sort of storyline is not Tolkien’s fault. He left them sufficient material to work with, even if the Second Age lacks the detail of “The Lord of the Rings.” It is not impossible to fill in the gaps in accordance with Tolkien’s spirit and style. They just don’t want to tell that kind of story.

Perhaps they are right. Perhaps audiences want the same adolescent fare in a new wrapper. But the allure of Tolkien’s work has always been rooted in its difference, as well as its quality. “The Lord of the Rings” succeeded because it was a sea breeze amid the dreary swamps of mid-20th-century literature. A filmmaker or showrunner who had the ability and the courage to adapt Tolkien faithfully would likely be rewarded.

It's been a great watch so far
Really liked last episode and excited for the rest of the season.

Sometimes it feels like the people who unconditionally love Tolkien have only ever read Tolkien. His review is hyperbolic, but he can certainly dislike the show. The statement above is an example of crossing the line from hyperbole into stupidity. It's the ESPN first take approach to argument making. "Why make 3 good points when I could make 7 weaker one and cap it off with something idiotic?"

This is the key.
It won't bother the crowd that basically spends most of their free time binge watching anything and that's what they count on. They can slap a beloved brand on their own bad writing and make more than they deserve on the backs of their betters. Also, they can insert their social engineering for young viewers.

If you want to make the “it doesn’t feel like Tolkien Complaint” you can, but it’s vague and rarely hashed out what that means.
It’s pretty clear the more screen time you try and fill, with less source material the less the hardcore Tolkien are going to enjoy your work.
LOTR trilogy is 3 books over 9 hours, and he cuts a chunk of the 3. Distilling about 1000 pages into 9 hours works pretty well.
The Hobbit is 1 book over 9 hours and it’s fun but no where near as good. Because the hobbit just shouldn’t be 9 hours. Maybe you can get to 6 but 9?
Now we’re at 50 hours and if your holding it to the standard of LOTR as far as a faithful adaptation f course you’re going to be disappointed.
I this guy Complained about no one wanted to try and make a big budget Tolkine movie or show ever again . Probably they shouldn’t.
Maybe 1 last crack at the Hobbit, but the Jackson LOTR trilogy is definitive and those are the 4 works of Tolkien that can be adapted without straying from the source material or having to fill major gaps.

I’ve enjoyed it so far but there are better shows on TV/streaming at this point. Keep in mind, I have some surface knowledge of Tolkien but I’m not horribly upset if they get away from source material. Particularly given that they have some decent restrictions of what they can even portray.
That all said, it feels incredibly slow developing at this point. It’s beautifully shot but it feels like it’s missing something. It’s not really appointment watching for me like House of the Dragon or Rick and Morty.

Explain to me how one kills an Orc. Is it stab, gut twist? Or does the twist come before the gut? It's difficult to follow such excellent schoolings from the great Guyladriel. I'm glad we now understand how Numenoreans became the most renown warriors in Middle Earth.
Agreed, great episode! I'm excited to see how she teaches Sauron to forge the rings. She's the bestestes!!!

The quest is too vague
Tolkien stories always focus around. Quest.

The showrunners are hack writers that came from Bad Reboot.
