he didn't even want to helm the prequels and only did it b/c everyone he asked turned him down.

Wasn't this due to Lucas making the prequels outside of SAG guidelines or something like that? I seem to remember that Gary Oldman was set to voice General Grievous but backed out due to this.

good movie but shite happened way to quick. one minute, anakin and obi were best buds. 5 minutes later dude was killing younglings and trying to decapitate his arse.. should have divided that into 2 different movies

I’ve got nothing to add here. This has been a great thread full of solid takes. I agree with every post here, somehow.

I am inspired to watch animated Clone Wars now.

Nope. It's a what couldve been movie. Done in by miscasting Annakin and poor writing.

Rewatching all three prequels this week, I'm convinced this has a positive reputation relative to the first two just because it is slightly darker in tone than the first two. Christensen is still awful, and his arc makes little sense. "I hate having masters, but I'll quickly bow to a new one." Yoda is an idiot. Padme digresses from a smart, active participant in the action of this conflict to the classic lady who reacts to her man's actions (Yeah, I know she's pregnant. Not a great excuse.)

Throughout the prequels Lucas teases viewers by regularly introducing characters that should be interesting, and then he either kills them before they go anywhere or he just forgets they exist.

If you're making prequels, you have to come up with something compelling enough to balance the fact that everyone knows exactly where these films are headed. Lucas did not do that.

The prequels have good movies trapped in shite.

Re-editing could elevate them all.

it has some really great parts. Air assault on Dooku's ship, Obi Wan vs. Grevous, lava planet duel, windu vs. Palpatine, and emergence of Darth Vader. they just tried to shoehorn too much Anakin character development into one movie.

I agree with this about character development. There's no logical consistency, the character traits of each character flip wildly movie to movie.

Padme is independent and outspoken in the first movie(s), then drops all that when the love story and pregnancy starts.

Anakin's motivations jump scene to scene. He's supposedly driven to the dark side by love for Padme, then force chokes her for relatively flimsy reasons. He fights against Jedi authority, then immediately kneels to Palpatine.

That's intentional because Jar Jar is controlling others' emotions and actions with the force.

Jar Jar being a Sith lord would have singlehandedly rescued the prequels. It would have been the twist to end all twists.

You know that idiot character that looks like it was stuffed in to sell children's toys, was uncomfortably close to a racial sterotype and everyone hated and mocked? Well, he's actually the main bad guy who fooled everyone.

It would have been the most meta twist ending ever. Not only would it trick the characters, it would have subverted years of audience feelings. Instead, it was the guy everyone thought was the bad guy since day 1.

It is once you watch the Clone Wars series.

I was about to say this. The Clone Wars series definitely does a good job of showing why Anakin started questioning the Jedi Order... but that still doesn't excuse the poor execution of his turn in the movies. It's not the audiences job to go watch a whole TV series to plug gaps in the movies.

One of my bigger issues with the movies and with a lot of prequels. After 3 films it's like they reached the final half hour and said "oh shite, we've got to get a lot of stuff done" and had to rush everything to set up The New Hope correctly. In the last 30-45 minutes:

1) Padme dies.
2) Gives birth to twins and randomly names them Luke and Leia.
3) Luke and Leia are sent to their respective planets.
4) Jedi Order destroyed.
5) Anakin is given the random Vader name and 90% of him gets burned, requiring the suit.
6) Yoda exiles himself.

etc.

The worst thing about the prequels is that they were made 10 years too soon. Advances in CGI and motion capture would have allowed the cast to interact with mo cap actors and be able to show some real emotion. Script leaks would have pushed Lucas into a better story, hell there are several full prequel trilogy fan fic scripts out there that would have told similar but more compelling stories. One of the best ones does have a Darth Jar Jar reveal.

Long story short, Jar Jar was exiled from the Gungans because they don’t really trust force users (left vague on why, but apparently it’s exceedingly rare in their species and when he showed it they told him to hit the bricks).

His reveal takes place in the Mace confrontation scene, he shows up when Mace has weakened the Emperor, goes to strike him, Anakin quickly attempts to subdue Mace, mace uses the force to snatch Anakin’s saber, destroys it, incapacitates Anakin, turns to strike the Emperor and boom, red saber through the chest.

Emperor tells jar jar to give his saber to Anakin for a special mission (order 66) and sends Jar Jar to Mustafar to wipe out the CIS. Anakin does his deed, leaves a hologram to rally surviving Jedi to Mustafar.

He arrives, finds Jar Jar has done his task, they have a nice little conversation (you know, to fill in the WTF blanks) and then each fills in the blanks of why they are there - Ole Sheev only has time for one apprentice, they throw dow, Obi-Wan arrives, they get they tag team briefly going on, Anakin slips up about protecting his new Master/The Emperor. Obi Wan kills Jar Jar then Padme shows up, she knows that a Jedi is responsible for the attack at the Temple, hasn’t heard from JJB (he is Naboo’s senator, basically doing what Padme did in Episode 2), and shite hits the fan all over again when she sees dead Jar Jar, Anakin says OWK did it which he confirms and she thinks he did the temple attack and blah blah, Anakin shows his true colors saying he’s going to kill OWK for his new master and he’ll show him the way to save Padme and such.

Long story short, Anakin goes HAM letting all that repressed rage out, trying to use the Force to bring Padme over to him (like literally, she’s like frick all this, I’m pregnant and shite is Ground Zero here), OWK tells him to stop because he is harming her, Anakin tells him to frick off, There is bad arse shot of Anakin using one hand to pull Padme while using the other to push OWK away, and OWK pushes through and hacks up Anakin’s leg and arm and kicks him down over by Jar Jar’s corpse.

Emperor arrives later, finds Anakin and Jar Jar with Anakin screaming I hate him, I hate him, he took her from me - thinking it’s about Jar Jar killing Padme (her small ship is still on the planet), and he tells Anakin to use that rage going forward. Anakin doesn’t tell him, because why would he? His greatest failure and really the only person he loved and cared about is gone, the whole reason he was tempted was to save Padme and he has nothing but the Emperor now.

It changed how Jar Jar was portrayed in TPM and made direct reference to Darth Plagueis being the one who funded the clones in AOTC. Dooku never existed, Maul survived his fall in TPM (like the canon) and had some robotic legging but I don’t believe it was the spider legging.

Forgot how Jango dies, but Maul is the one who “kidnaps” Palpatine in Episode 3, and of course Anakin kills him.

There were other small changes along the way, but that was the best fan fic one I read and was actually the best one because it was like 80% of what we saw, but with better trimmings and more of a flow. Really shows you how cunning and well thought out the Sith’s plan was and why Anakin was so unstable and quick to turn. He trusted people more than organizations or ideals. When people failed him, he didn’t take it well to say the least.

Return of the Jedi is kind of a crappy movie until the throne room.
