In summary, you're a moron.

You're forgetting the theaters splits and that advertising budgets aren't usually included in the reported production budgets.

While the math is different for every movie (bigger the studio and more high profile the movie the more they can tilt the split in their favor) you can get a rough estimate of how much a movie made for the studio by cutting the gross in half. So while it made $260m ww the studio would likely only get $130-$150m of that take. Add in the advertising budget and that's how it could have potentially lost $80m.

It's not an exact science but at least until fairly recently when Disney, Sony, and Warner really started putting the screws to theater owners you could be pretty close to the studio take with this method.

Also, that usually won't include DVD/Blu Ray sales (which again have splits with stores), merchandising, or the TV/streaming rights. $80m might be a worst case scenario exaggeration for write off purposes but odds are it broke even at best.

says 150-185 does include marketing.

The rest is just you talking out of your arse. You don't know any of this about the movie.

If it only had a $30m marketing budget I'm not shocked that it didnt make what was needed to put it in the black for everyone.

Looking around it looks like Sony got their investment back but everyone else got screwed.

quote:

Blade Runner 2049 was a sequel to a much-loved cult classic, but it seems that the follow up is going to end up achieving similar status as its predecessor, as the sequel looks to become an official box office bomb. With a global box office take of just over $240 million, Blade Runner 2049 is now staring down the barrel of an $80 million loss for production company Alcon Entertainment and other investors.

Blade Runner 2049's production budget was about $155 million but when marketing and other costs are added in, the $240 million global box office just isn't enough to make money for everybody involved. Part of this is because one studio involved in the production, Sony, brokered a deal that allowed them to recoup their investment before everybody else, in exchange for a smaller share of the profits. Sony is now expected to make back their $110 million that they put into the film, meaning everybody else has to divide up what's left.

The lack of success is especially hard on Alcon Entertainment. The small production company that previously had not been involved in major productions like Blade Runner 2049 and saw this as a sort of coming out party for larger projects. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, in order to be a success, Blade Runner 2049 would have needed to bring in $400 million globally, and it's going to come in well under that number.

So Blade Runner 2049 was a bomb, and according to blueboy a terrible movie.

It's a small trifle. He was just trying to gotcha me with a dude movie that "bombed." It was flaccid and ineffectual, as usual.

My main point remains. Every movie that is hyped as being all about girl power is horrible or completely bombs, usually the latter and always the latter when it's not piggybacked onto an established franchise.

Girl power is fast becoming associated with bad products. Kennedy is accomplishing the opposite of what she claims to want.

Bridesmaids, Girls Trip, Crazy Rich Asians, Pitch Perfect? They all were big hits that a ton of people really like.

You are painting with pretty broad brush.

Chick flicks?

If anything, the fems would bitch and moan because they patronize women or some other garbage.

Ghostbusters. Star Wars. Annihilation. You know, the ones that are marketed and controlled by women who "challenge traditional gender roles" and all that jazz. Audiences are coming to expect crap when they see the girl power label.

Nope. I was just showing that you're still a dumbass and no one should pay attention to your worthless opinions.

I set you up and, as expected, you fell on your face.

And not a single one of those movies was marketed as a "girl power" or female empowerment movie.
