Rank the Harry Potter books (or movies) (Spoilers) (long)

You can do books or movies if you haven't read them (for shame)
Disclaimer: I love all of these books, even the ones I rank low, I've read them all many times
#1: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (book 7): This book was exactly what I wanted from the seventh book. It was entertaining, it brought on a tough challenge for the 3, it did a great job wrapping up the series. From The Battle of Hogwarts on this book is completely epic, She wrote that final battle scene perfectly. It's my favorite book of all time, even if does get a little slow in the middle.
***One dislike***The biggest flaw in this book is Ron smehow speaking Parseltongue, going into the Chamber of Secrets and finding a Basilisk fang. Ok lets go step by step here: How the frick did Ron speak Parseltongue? No it's not believable that he had heard Harry do it so much that he "just did it". Parseltongue is not like a foreign language you can learn, you can either do it or you can't, and Ron can't. But even getting past that, why on earth would Dumbledore decide it was a good idea to just leave a giant dead snake with fangs full of venom down in the cellar wthout cleaning it up for 5 years (talk about stinking up the castle). He would have gotten Harry or someone else who speaks Parseltongue to open the Chamber, and he (or Hagrid) would have gone down there and cleaned up that mess, the snake wouldn't just be laying down there where they left it. Now heres the really tricky part, Ron wasn't there when Harry killed the snake remember? Because he was stuck behind a ton of rocks!!! The only way they got out was because Fawkes flew them out; so how did Ron and Hermione get down to the snake??? I wish they would have found a different way for them to destroy the cup, or AT LEAST have Harry run over to the bathroom and open the Chamber for them, I could get past the rest of it I guess...
#2: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (book 5): I know some people don't seem to like this book so much, but I thought it was fantastic. The whole Dumbledore ignoring Harry was annoying as hell, but once you find out why it makes complete sense. This book introduced the first time we saw that there was a group of people who actually were working on stopping Voldemort, and it wasn't just Harry and Dumbledore. Also Dumbledores army was great IMO, and the Ministry of Magic part is very very good (Sirius
). But the main reason this is my number two is Dolores Umbridge; she is a GREAT villain. I mean I hate her SO much, she is so worried about rules and order that she is willing to torture and segregate people. Honestly I hate her more than Voldemort, at least he's evil, knows it, and is trying to turn the world into his world. She is so obsessed with power and order that she becomes almost as evil as him, but she actually believes she's doing the right thing; and this book was her introduction
#3: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: This was the first book that I wasn't dying for him to get to school so we could see some action. This book is great and introduces some good characters, the Triwizard Tournament was epic and I loved it, but there are two main reasons this book is high for me. The Quidditch World Cup was awesome, the way they got there, all the fans and craziness; and than when the Death Eaters sent out the Dark Mark and all the chaos ensued. To me that had to wake some people up to Voldemorts return being real, it was just an awesome few chapters. The second reason is Voldemorts return to full body. The graveyard scene was epic and it explained a lot as far as the connection between Harry and Voldemort. Cedric dying was awful, but necessary for the story, Voldemort is evil, he doesn't care about random people. The whole wand scene not only shows the strange connection they have, but also it shows how much even the Death Eaters fear Voldemort, he tells them not to step in and they don't dare for fear of punishment.
One thing I don't like about the book is that Harry gets into the Tournament and they let him compete. I mean c'mon, use some common sense, their are two things that could have happened. A: he cheated the system, which obviously is cheating, it's not allowed and he shouldn't be allowed to compete.(this still wouldn't explain why it spit out a 4th name) B: this is what happened, somebody put his name in the Goblet and messed with it to ensure his name came out. Now obviously this is a highly powered wizard, and since there is a crazy powerful psychopath hell bent on taking over the world by killing Harry; I don't think it would be too difficult to figure out why someone would decide to do that. As smart as Dumbledore is, how the frick did he not see that one coming???
#4: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: The introduction of Sirius Black, this book marks one of the greatest twists in the story or in any book really. I mean Sirius is GOOD!!!
I'm usually pretty good about forseeing twists but this one blind-sided me. The great part of this book is even knowing the twists it's still re readable. I mean the Animagus thing, Wormtail being Scabbers, Lupin as a Weir wolf, this is a great book. The back in time scene was very cool but it is the reason this book is just #4. OK, I get when you go back in time you don't exactly want to announce it to the world, I see why people would be confused, sure. But why the frick wouldn't they be able to tell themselves?!?!?!? Hermione knows she has the Time Turner, if she busted into Hagrids cottage, the past Hermione would know exactly what was going on and could help explain it; it really wouldn't have been that big of an issue. And if this had happened they could have captured Wormtail, and cleared Sirius's name pretty easily really. Now I get why Rowling didn't write it like that because of the rest of the series, but I wish she would have found a different way for them to go back in time, or just a different way to save Sirius that doesn't have such a big plot hole. Also, very conveniently they destroyed all the Time Turners in the 5th book and for some reason can't make anymore
I mean clearly she realized these time machines were way to convenient and would really make Harry's job easier, so they all got destroyed, I mean it's kinda lame; I wish she never would have brought time travel into the world.

#5: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (book 1): Honestly the main reason this book isn't lower is because it started the whole series. I used to have this book as my favorite because of that until I went back and re read them the first time and realized how little substance this book has compared to most of the others. It's still a great book but honestly it leans on you being mystified by the magic and saddened about Harry's life with the Dursleys and doesn't provide a lot of Substance besides that. Yea it introduces Hogwarts, and the whole story, all the characters ect... which is why I don't have it last. But on re reads looking past all that, it doesn't progress the story a ton until the VERY END, it's a lot of it is focussed on winning the House cup, and by book 3, nobody gives two shits about that. Plus, those challenges to get into the Sorcerers stone is clearly too easy if three first years can do it...
#6: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (book 6): There were only a few parts of this book that really progress the story, when they are in the Pensieve, Ginny and Harry hooking up, and obviously the end when Dumbledore dies. The rest was just filler, she threw Ron a bone, basically said frick you Hermione. I mean half the book is focussed on Quidditch, when they know Voldemort is out there and Harry knows he's going to have to face him, yet half the book is about the Quidditch team or about his feelings towards girls... The book served it's purpose however of setting the stage for the epic 7th book.
#7: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (book 2): A lot of people probably won't agree with me on this, but as far as the Harry Potter books, this one is clearly the worst for me. I mean we can start with the Ministry of Magic being inept and unable to tell the difference between Elf magic and real magic (let's not even get into the Big Brother aspect of them knowing when underage kids do magic
). This book was really a cookie cutter of the first one. Boring intro at the Dursleys, get to school it picks up some, talks about school work and Quidditch (less interesting the second time around). Ends with Harry battling a version of Voldemort but not quite actually him. The best thing that happened in this book is they destroyed a Horcrux. Don't get me wrong, I still love the book, but compared to the others it's the worst.
I know this was long, I hope you read and enjoy because I spent a good amount of time on this

The books:
1. Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Half-blood Prince
3. Order of the Phoenix
4. Deathly Hallows
5. Goblet of Fire
6. Sorcerer's Stone
7. Chamber of Secrets

7. Goblet of Fire
8. Deathly Hallows Part 2
I cannot get passed how terribly the battle at the end of Deathly Hallows Part 2 was. It was a complete abortion. The jumping off of the cliff, the deletion of the entire battle and badass monologue scene between Harry and Voldemort in the Great Hall, the stupid snake killing scene with Ron, Hermione, and Neville, the lack of Hagrid in the last movie, and the list goes on and on.
It may not be the popular opinion, but they really sucked it up with the last movie.

Although we pretty much differ in opinions on everything else, I'm pretty sure we can all agree that Prisoner of Azkaban was the best of the movies.

Honestly it did everything almost perfectly until Harry revived, and then it just fricking sucks. I loved everything up to that, but god damn did they frick it up. It should have merely had Voldemort and Harry slowly circling each other with one curse thrown. Who the frick thought it was a good idea to throw Harry and Voldemort off a cliff face?

I don't see how its possible that this is the second worst of the novels. Its just great. And if you want to get into filler, reread the OotP.

I just can't get over the fact that they screwed up so much.

This is how it should have gone down:
1. Everyone is in the Great Hall
2. Bellatrix is battling Hermione, Luna, and Ginny. Mrs. Weasley comes in, gets pissed and starts battling Bellatrix.
3. Voldemort is battling Kingsley, McGonaghell, and Slughorn. He tosses them all back out of rage when Bellatrix is killed.
4. Harry shows up and monologues at Voldemort, reversing the whole villain monologues at the hero cliche.
5. One curse, Voldemort slumps to the ground, people yell.
They should have just stuck to the damn book.

I've reread them all multiple times. The Half Blood Prince just strays away from what the focus of the books was at the end of GoF and OotP at times. Don't get me wrong, the Pensieve parts were awesome, getting to see into Voldemort as a kid and growing up was awesome. Just because I rank it low doesn't mean I don't still love the book. And it has parts that are some of my favorite parts of the entire series (the Pensieve parts, the cave, the ending). But I dk, all the crap with Quidditch, and fricking Lavender Brown, the Slug Club, it just didn't seem to have a place in the book when compared to the dark crap that was going on in the Pensieve.
Don't get me wrong, it's still great and has awesome parts.

Tiger1242, flip the last 2 and I agree with your list, and I am basing it on the books. I like your reasoning a lot and it closely mirrors my own.
I was actually in England and Ireland for 10 days when the 6th book came out, so I bought it in London (British version took a little translating at times) and, by the time I was done, I wanted to find Rowling's house while I was there, give her back the book, and demand my money back.
The book was quickly ruined for me when Harry had such mediocre OWL scores. He really is too stupid to be the hero in a world where knowledge of magic is what determines your power and competence. It is why Dumbledore and Voldemort are so powerful. The only legitimate threat to Voldemort would be another prodigy along the lines of a young Tom Riddle, Dumbledore, or, by all accounts, James or Lily Potter. When I saw those OWL scores, I nearly stopped reading because it was no longer feasible to me.
But I trudged on, and the overall plot was just boring and did not make Harry look very competent. He spent most of the book trying to pry information from Slughorn, then is less than useless when Dumbledore takes him to find the Horcrux, then is very easily defeated by Snape. Above all, Dumbledore died, and at the time we had no idea that he was already dying and it was a set up to save Malfoy from himself. I had no desire to read a book where Dumbledore died and by such ease, but at least that part was explained in book 7.

Goblet of fire had the least to do with the overall story. Half blood was one of the most important to tie the story. Goblet is one of the worst books in retrospect.

I agree with all of that. When Harry just flopped out of Hagrids arms and ran away I was like WTF!!! Him being under the cloack firing protective spells and the epic reveal and conversation with Voldemort was so awesome in the books. I wanted to see that in the movie
