Charles Van Doren, the disgraced game show contestant who inspired the 1994 movie "Quiz Show," has died. He was 93.

The dashing young academic's meteoric rise and fall as a corrupt game show player served as a cautionary tale about the staged competitions of early television after he admitted to cheating on the 1950s show “Twenty-One.”

His son John Van Doren told the Associated Press that his father died of natural causes Tuesday at a care center for the elderly in Canaan, Conn. Funeral services will be private.

That's a great movie.

I feel like he caught more heat than he should have over that.

Godspeed Mr. Van Doren.

He caught more heat than Stemple because of his family name and what was seen as the academic aristocrat class...more was expected of him. In fact it was seen as unseemly to even be on the show.

Stemple was seen as just another working-class schmuck. So who could fault him for taking the easy cash.

Very. It makes my 90s top 5, maybe top 3.

But not as a historical movie. It slants the story to glorify a peripheral figure in the investigation, Richard Goodwin. But Goodwin is a demigod among the left for being the first White house figure to turn on LBJ over Vietnam. This script was one of his rewards.
