Is the title Return of THE Jedi, as in Anakin, or is it Return of the Jedi, as in the Jedi Order, or is it referring to Luke? I’ve heard all before.

I like to think it’s referring to Anakin.

I can see it as both Anakin and the Jedi Order, but the Jedi Order couldn't fully come back until Anakin returned to the light side.

It is a bit of both, but definitely the emphasis on Anakin. It was originally supposed to be called Revenge of the Jedi, which absolutely would be referring to Anakin.

This. But in my mind it is really just about return of Anakin to the light. At the conclusion of the film, there is only one remaining Jedi, Luke. Two Jedi only existed together for a brief moment which isn't exactly the reestablishment of the Jedi Order. Thus, their "return" is nothing more than a defeat of the last known Sith in the galaxy and their future is uncertain. Seeing as the saga is about the Skywalker family, the title should solely refer to Anakin.

Damn Anakin/Vader is such a great character.

I thought it was in reference to Luke. He has completed his training and become the first Jedi in the Galaxy after Obi-wan and Yoda died. As in the Jedi (plural) are back.

I never thought about it referring to Anakin. Cool.

Found this online:

According to the official Starwars.com biography of Luke Skywalker, the film "Return of the Jedi" ends with the return of Anakin Skywalker. It follows that the 'Jedi' mentioned in the title is Anakin rather than Luke or "The Jedi Order"

Definitely supposed to be unclear so that it can be both

Considering the original title was to be "Revenge of the Jedi," I think it would be Anakin, since he killed the Emperor.
