Question about the end of Alien

I just watched Alien for the first time and I thought it was pretty good. Kind of hokey and stupid in a lot of parts but overall a decent popcorn movie.
My question is about the end when Ripley is doing the self distruct sequence. I was falling asleep while watching the end last night, but it seemed to me like she set the ship to blow up, ran around screaming for a few minutes, and then decided to reverse it? I didn't understand why she suddenly wanted to stop the self destruct sequence after she went through all the steps to start it. Any help?

Hokey and stupid?
She aborts the self-destruct because the Alien is blocking her attempts to get to the shuttle. She doesn't want to get blown up.

It probably won't like fire. Let's send one guy all by himself through the air vents to shoot fire at it.
Go get the cat in this room full of wet chains for some reason because it might show up on the motion sensor. We wouldn't want to confuse a giant man-sized alien for a cat.
Just a couple of the dumb parts off the top of my head.

You could do to lose a couple of dumb parts off of your head.

Most things die if you set them on fire.
The motion sensors were 1970's quality, they weren't detecting much.
Alien's a legendary movie for a reason. If you thought it was hokey, you're going to love Alien: Resurrection.

Then you wouldn't send one guy with one flamethrower all by himself.
There is no good reason to go get the cat in the wet chain room. If you follow the motion sensors and you find an alien, shoot it. If it's the cat, don't shoot it. Pretty simple.

I don’t think you were paying attention to the movie because they had no clue how big the Alien was at the time. They thought it was still rat-sized. They didn’t know it had been growing

Still pretty easy to distinguish a cat from an alien that just jumped out of a guy's chest.
Are movies not up for scrutiny on this board or what?

How? They were around the same size at the time. The scanners could only pick up movement.
I am ok with scrutinizing movies, I do it on here all the time, but I scrutinize where I see a logical break that can’t be answered within realm of the universe I’m watching.

The only thing I can say is “get off my lawn” cause you are obviously a kid and do not appreciate what a film like this meant at the time and meant for many many years until such thing became common place.
The movie is a perfect sci fi film with pacing and shock value that was well ahead of its time.
I am sorry you were not born earlier to appreciate it.

The ONLY sci-fi horror movie better than this one is The Thing.
It is a masterpiece.

Ripley is one of the best heroes of all time. She can hold her own with any of the men. Totally believable.
No female actress is close. Maybe Theron in Mad Max

Sounds like you weren't following along with the movie.
They had no idea that the alien was big, until Dallas found out the hard way. People were shook up that Kane was dead, but they didn't think it was big yet.
They were only able to rig up 2 flamethrowers, they didn't have any weapons on board. They were trying to flush it out and drive it towards an airlock, so they could vent it into space. They didn't send both flamethrowers in, because they wanted to keep one with the rest of the crew. Only one guy went in because more would just be in the way.
They debated going back into cryosleep, but nobody wanted to do that with the creature still running around the ship. There was no telling (in their minds) if it could get into the sleep chamber.
As for way Ripley set the self-destruct sequence, and then tried to stop it... she was loading stuff into the shuttle (escape boat). At one point she was going back to the shuttle, and realized the alien was now in there. So she tried to stop the self-destruct... but it was too late.

I think they realized it was big after the first death because the black guy kept repeating “the thing was big” in the very next scene.

This is an abortion of an OP. Here’s an idea for you: go back and watch the movie again, actually paying attention this time. This may require putting your fricking phone down. Then, come back here and apologize to everyone for your retardation.

You are and always were a shitty poster. Now you come here with one of the most obvious trolls ever. Dude, STFU and go back to what ever rock you came from.
Plus, if you are going to post about or even troll about the end of a classic movie like Alien, at least have the class to post one of the best things about the ending.

The last time they saw the alien it was roughly the size of a cat.
Edit: I see this has been covered repeatedly. Carry on tar and feathering the OP.
