Just watched this movie and it was great from start to finish. If you haven't seen it then I highly recommend it. DiCaprio did a great job in this movie.

Spoilers:

At the end after he has had the breakthrough and the doctor walks up to talk to him. Does he purposely act like he thinks his doctor is his partner by calling him "Chuck" so he will be lobotomized and forget what happened to his family? Or has he actually regressed?

The way he said "you can live as a monster, or die as a good man" makes me think he's tired of living with the memories and wants to have the procedure.

What do you guys think?

The way that I interpreted it is that he purposefully calls him Chuck and it is his desire to be lobotomized.

Naw not a top still spinning thing. Him wanting the lobotomy was clear with the question about living or dying.

Plus he just seemed to calmly walk off with the orderlies. But I would have thought his doctor would have stopped him after realizing he was faking it.

Maybe he really was a detective.

There is no way a doctor would be that terrible to a patient. Playing along with it the whole time, tramatizing the other patients, increasing the paranoia in the cemetery....etc.

Had to be the worst doctor in the history of movies.

Treating mental patients with any semblance of decency wasn't exactly common practice back then...

They lobotomized him for fricks sake.

I agree. I like it way more than Inception. Scorsese/Dicaprio are great.

...It was pretty clear that he chose to die, imo. He would rather die as a hero than live as a monster.

Just like that.

Unfortunately, Shutter Island isn't original in the premise of "oh, shite! you were crazy the whole time and this is all a mirage." Due to that, I think it's vastly undervalued as a movie.

If viewers can grasp you may have seen this concept quite a few times before, Shutter Island blows almost all of them away. The direction, action, story are all precise. Shutter Island is very rewatchable not on concept, but execution.

...also, if Laeddis really believed he was Teddy at the end, why would he calmly get up and walk with the guards and doctors to meet his fate? Especially when he just told his partner that "they won't get us". "we're too smart"....Andrew was a smart man. He set it up so it would be over for him.

Blood Diamond has been my favorite for a while but I think this one beats it. You wouldn't think you would want to watch it again after knowing the outcome, but the acting and storyline is just so captivating that you want to.
