Tiny Dancer - Almost Famous
This is always th number one answer for me when this comes up.
The movie took a forgotten song from 30 years before that wouldn't have made the greatest hits collection of Elton John and completely reinvented the way it is heard and appreciated by weaving it into the fabric of a great film in a truly crucial scene that made both the scene and the song a classic that everyone immediately knows and recognizes and loves.
It is an amazing accomplishment blending music and storytelling.
Quentin Tarantino is extremely gifted at this as well. Pulp Fiction and Resevoir Dogs specifically take multiple songs from different eras and make them integral and inseparable from the scenes they are a part of. Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon, Stuck in the Middle With You, You Never Can Tell, Little Green Bag just to list a few. Most on this board can probably instantly picture those scenes.
Danny Boyd pulls a similar feat with Trainspotting. Lust for Life and Perfect Day for starters are synonymous with those scenes to most people that have seen that movie.

I just noticed OP said "popular songs" that became synonymous with one movie.
The ones I listed were maybe lesser known songs that were made popular by being a part of the scenes in the movie.
He may be looking for something more like Old Time Rock and Roll, Bohemian Rhapsody, Twist and Shout, You Can't Always Get What You Want which were already popular hits but now immediately draw you to those movies.
