It was a bad year for movies from the artsy ones (Zero Dark Thirty was meh at best and that's with me letting the patriot in myself out) and from the blockbusters (Battleship, MIB3, Brave, etc.).
Even number years always seem to only produce 4-5 blockbusters that stick out and 1, maybe 2 Academy movies that are actually entertaining. The Avengers, TDKR, Skyfall, and The Hobbit were all legit this year. Django was great.
I saw about 40ish movies in theaters this year. I don't regret seeing any of them, but half of them I wouldn't pay to see again.
That said, if I had to give out the award for Best Picture based on that list, it'd be Django.
2013 will be much much better than 2012.

My favorites were Django and Beasts of the Southern Wild, mostly because they were unlike any film that's come along in a long time.
Daniel Day Lewis should be a lock but Christoph Watz was awesome.
I didn't see anything extraordinary in Jessica Chastain's performance, but it was solid.
Hathaway should be a lock.
Tommy Lee Jones is a reasonable lock.

DDL and Waltz aren't in the same category.
I still can't believe Arkin got a supporting actor nod. He was barely in the movie and there were more deserving people such as Leo for Django.

Wow.

What did I say? In the grand scheme of things...what do either of these things matter?
