What you are describing is writing, not acting. It was horrendous over acting.

I disagree. Pete Campbell was supposed to be that way. Insecure, obnoxious, and readily making an arse of himself until his character arc really develops.

That’s not overacting. That’s nailing that character.

That's her! Did Don raw ramp her? I don't remember.

Wasn't she living with her single father?

Great acting

I worked with several people very similar to Pete. Insecure, backstabbing and underachievers.

That’s literally writing.

Delivery and facial expressions looked like someone trying way too hard. I understand yall love his character but go back and watch his tone, cadence and expressions. It is way too over the top regardless of the time period. It’s super cringeworthy.

Why do you keep saying this? The writers write, the actor acts.

Because people keep saying his acting was great then describe things that were on the script and had nothing to do with the acting. The writing of the character was great. The actors presentation was some of the worst I have ever seen in a tv show. Some people can’t figure out the difference.

Wut?

He’s supposed to be over the top. That’s the point. He’s supposed to be a try hard. That’s the writing AND the acting.

Why are you clinging to such a poor take?

imagine stepping out on Alison Brie with fricking Peggy. Season 1 Peggy too.

I've know quite a few people, my dad included, who stepped out on the wife. Every single one of them was with a downgrade. Good women are rarely willing to be cheated with.

I was going to start a thread because I'm rewatching Mad Men. Episode 1...

He just randomly shows up at the new secretary's home the first night of the day she is employed? That didn't freak her out?

How did he even know where she lived? Then she takes him to bed???

First time I watched Mad Men, I hated Pete Campbell

Every other time I’ve watched mad men, he’s one of my favorite characters of the show

I don’t think he talks unbelievable or over the top really, he fits in well for the time period

I think this is universal

That’s the writing not the acting.

Back on the original point. The character required an actor to make Pete as punch able as he was. The acting was perfect for the character.

If anything Pete is the one who redeems himself while Don is a continuous cheat and alcoholic. I could definitely be misremembering but wasn't his tryst with Peggy the only one of the whole show? It's no excuse, but it's not something he continues to do throughout the series (if I'm remembering right, but maybe not).

Pete had multiple affairs throughout the show, but most of them weren't on screen. Ones on screen that I can remember, though, include Peggy, the nanny of his neighbor (from when they still live in the city), prostitutes, his neighbor's wife (when they live in the burbs), and if you want to count it his girlfriend in California (although him and his wife were separated at this point). Through dialogue on the show it is definitely implied that he's had multiple affairs beyond what's shown the screen (based on conversations between him and Trudy as well as conversations Pete had with other characters throughout). Additionally, part of the reason Pete got the second apartment in the city was to use as a cover for one night stands.

Was his character way over acted or was that a creative decision by the actor or director for him to talk all unbelievable and over the top like?

Seriously I watched the first few seasons but cringed every time he was on the screen.

L take. The character of Pete was well acted and well written.

Maybe one of the worst takes I’ve ever seen on this board.

I’ve got nothing for you, but a downvote.

Maybe it's you who has the problem here?

The ole if you meet an a-hole in the morning, you met an a-hole. If you meet assholes all day , you're the a-hole.

(Not calling you an a-hole but the logic is the same).

He's separated from Trudy during this part.

He did have that whole drunken kimd of rapey sex with the maid in his building during the summer when Trudy was away though.

Not only did he have sex with her but got her fired (and sent back to her home country).

Always felt like that was his low point.
