Amazing that during our nation's greatest anti-war movement, we enjoyed one of the greatest war films ever made.

Few pay any attention to that. The director did the entire opening Patton monologue with that issue in mind.
The oversized American flag. The larger than life General bedazzling with more medals than Mark Spitz. The fiercely militant patriotic speech.

All were combined to grab the audience, drag them into the man and the film by transcending audience allegiances, patriotic feelings, political opinions, and beliefs about Vietnam.

It was brilliant and staged, written, directed, and acted flawlessly. No matter where you were on the political spectrum, whether you hated men like Patton or admired them, you were fully engaged to watch and appreciate the film.

This is one of my favorite films.

The two volume "Patton Papers" books are exhaustive. Highly recommended. I've read a few other books on the man, including O'Reilly's Killing Patton, about Patton's death.

Carlo d'Este wrote a great biography of Patton.

George C. Scott said in an interview that he had to fight like hell to keep Coppola from making him appear to be some whacko.

Did anyone else hear that this was suppose to be an anti-war movie. Coppola was surprised at the reverse affect.
