Little known fact:
One of the clowns in the opening of TDK is played by the older brother (Tony) from Blossom. He was one of the ones cutting the power (or whatever) on the roof:

the only thing that I wasn't a huge fan of was the device used to track down the Joker. It seemed a bit far-fetched in the "realistic world" that Nolan created. It actually seemed like something straight out of the Arkham video games, which would be awesome if that was the world that he had built.

In the previous movie they used a microwave emitter on a train to vaporize an entire city's water supply. Cell phone radar might actually be more realistic.

Exactly. In Batman Begins you had the microwave emitter, which if used in real life, would have killed everyone within close proximity. It's designed to vaporize water and humans are made up of water.
Nolan's Batman trilogy maybe grounded in reality but they are still movies. They still require you to suspend disbelief.
