I thought the pace was fine, but I'd bet that it picks up significantly over the next few episodes. Lot of the first episode was spent on character development, i.e. dinner scene, the nihilist MM scene in the car, etc. I'd guess that we get more and more actual case material as we go on, but I'm hoping that the show focuses on the characters and their relationship, using the case as a narrative tool

I had zero problem with the pacing of the episode.

By the time the 2nd episode comes around I'll probably be on my fifth time around on the pilot.

Harrelson as an actor in general playing a company man type of character. I liked Simmons suggestion of Josh Lucas because he is younger (42) and seems a bit more straight laced. Lucas is also much closer in age to McConaughey (44) and would be a better fit as a peer.
Harrelson as Marty in 1995 looks retarded with the wig on. Harrelson is also 52 years old, which means he is 15 yrs older than Michele Monaghan. Our experience with him as an actor would seem like he is a better fit in the weirdo/burnout Rusty role than the "conflicted straight laced family man banging the legal assistant on the side" character that is Marty.

Who. Gives. A. frick. The things some people will nitpick. Scholarships and age gaps between a husband and wife?
Both actors did a great job in the ONE episode we have seen.

The idea that boring cop Marty could pull a hot piece of arse is pretty silly

I am not nitpicking anything. I am just saying in a broad overview of Ep1 the casting IMHO is a bit over the top
FTR my wife busted out laughing when she saw WH with the blonde wig with the razor sharp part in 1995
it is a bit of a distraction
clearly WH and MM have a developmental deal with HBO as Producers of the series so putting themselves as the two leads makes business sense. I think it is bit of overkill for two prominent actors to be in these roles. I can see room for one of them as Rusty with an unknown or lesser known actor as Marty. So then we are sort of forced to focus on the Rusty role. But having someone as prominent as WH as Marty one cant help but watch and see WH in an awful toupee trying not to get run over by MM's stealing every scene with his "genius with a damaged soul" acting
on the flip side, Marty in the car telling Rusty to STFU and reflect was gold

i could do a lot of other things with the 4 extra hours then watch the same show 4 more times in one week.

Good god some people over analyzed that first episode. I didn't think twice about WH's wig.
