was thinking about re watching it before Sunday. Looks like you could pick more things up the second time around.

Will re watch before episode 2.

Harrelson as an actor in general playing a company man type of character.

The crew has stated in numerous interviews that the characters are not really what they appear in the beginning, and as the show goes on it is revealed that they are much more alike than they realize.
Point being, Marty is probably not the straight-laced company man that you think he is.

And anyone who thought it was too slow is pretty much a mouthbreather, IMO.

i guess color me a mouthbreather then. i thought it was a little slow for only being an 8 episode season. itll be a great show, just certain parts seemed to drag on for a bit. like it took a good bit of time to finally get to the point of the dinner scene.

Got around to watching it...

Nice to see that HBO didn't go the True Blood route with fake Louisiana towns and ridiculous accents.

The shoutouts to Lafayette and Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville had me fist pumping.

And Woody played baseball for USL!

The performances were as amazing as you'd expect. Funny how they make everyone around them look like amateurs.

And Don Yesso from Frank's Place as the State Trooper! HA!

I thought the pace was fine, but I'd bet that it picks up significantly over the next few episodes. Lot of the first episode was spent on character development, i.e. dinner scene, the nihilist MM scene in the car, etc. I'd guess that we get more and more actual case material as we go on, but I'm hoping that the show focuses on the characters and their relationship, using the case as a narrative tool

I think the case will come secondary to the characters...

As another poster said a few pages back. This is HBO, which means you get a full sixty minutes of a show. So it's really like getting ten episodes.

Network shows give you 40 minutes of acual show per episode. Here we get 8 full hours. 8 hours = 480 min = 12, 40 min episodes.

Not trying to nitpick (or be a dick), just saying its more like a good half season if not more of a regular network show, which is nice.

ETA: This episode was awesome, and I really hope the weekly discussions can steer clear of this stupid "scholarship" and related bullshite.

not trying to be any more of a dick but thats really debatable depending on what style you care for more. if i compare this to GoT, another hbo hour drama with the same amount of episodes, the pacing is much better I find. There usually isnt a lot of dead space and slow moments.

Why does the pacing of this show need to be compared to other shows? And we should really be discussing the pacing of this ONE frickING EPISODE. Almost like judging a book on the first chapter alone.

I've never watched GoT. But, isn't that series based off of series of books? It's possible that the writers didn't have to spend that long on character development because most of the audience knows the characters.

TD moved at a decent pace imo. We got information on both main characters ['95 & '12] and enough information on the main storyline to keep us wanting more.

agreed. just drawn out a little. i gave an example of the dinner scene. clearly others felt the same. but i agree, its one episode. its not a big issue. i expect it to definitely pick up now that theyve laid a solid ground work.

Please no. I don't want to picture WH and MM's flaccid dick in every other scene. I am looking forward to Monahans boobies though.

When the choir suddenly piped up with "one weiner next to another weiner" I lost it. I haven't laughed that hard since season 8

Really don't want to derail this thread though as I'm excited about Sunday and this show in general

So

It isn't the same kind of television show. GoT is cramming thousands of pages of characters, places, and events into an hour. It's a medieval fantasy world with dragons, magic and shadow babies. OF course it's faster paced. That's like saying Diehard was faster paced than the English Patient and using that to prove a point.

True Detective is a character driven crime drama. If you want a buddy copy show, I'm sure Brooklyn 99 will be more your speed (it really is a great show).

i could compare it to Homeland then. same type of networks and both about cases and investigating. The first episode of Homeland was much quicker to draw you in and set up the story. im really not knocking TD. just felt the first episode was a bit slow/boring at times.
