Seems like a good day to start watching this show. Got 2 to catch up on i believe.

I'm making it a point to watch the episodes live so far. Isn't like there is anything else to watch on a Tuesday night besides baseball

Episode really picks up at the end.
I really doubt that is the last we'll see of that character somehow.

I’m enjoying the show. As in the original the cop support crew around Raylsnd is awesome.
Why does the kid talk like that? Why is there no hot woman? If they have him develop a love interest with that black lawyer I will throw my TV in the pool.
On that note. Seeing bad arse Rayland cower to that lawyer is disgusting

I mean he beat the shite out of her client haha that should be a lawsuit by itself that could get his badge taken.
I think people are wanting to see raylan be the same guy he was 15 years ago and that just isn't realistic, although once again his job is ruining his relationship with his daughter like it did with his wife.

This is my biggest gripe. I’m trying to suspend disbelief around the plot holes (“City Primeval” is an Elmore Leonard novel about Mansell in Detroit, though it doesn’t include Raylans character so this is a loose adaptation at best) but the casting for the daughter sucks. I realize it’s Olyphants IRL daughter but the voice is awful and she doesn’t even look 15 (because she’s 20).

Maybe the kid is on a plane and gone.

It’s not bad but very uneven. At times doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be
I think the biggest thing missing is the charm of the Kentucky background. The over the top villains and quippy dialogue felt really natural in a backwoods setting, while sometimes this has felt like it wants to be the Shield
Holbrooks character would probably fit in great in the regular justified, but with the plain (and usually visually/colorfully dulled) background of Detroit makes his antics seem just cartoonish

Well the original show had a bunch of morons as the villains and then 1 main villain for each season. How many times did he lock up dewey, Boyd, rickie?
Seeing as this is an 8 episode limited series they are focusing on the main villain. The move he pulled at the red light alone makes him more competent than 90% of the OG villains.
It's a different setup entirely, they are trying to setup more of an even matchup than someone like this that you were never in doubt raylan would embarrass.
The old show could just keep throwing in more and more villains, that doesn't really work with the limitation of 8 episodes.

I think this story has been fine so far.
I also think that Justified, outside of an incredibly stellar second season, was never a great show. It was a perfectly good show that just happened to have two great lead actors with two of the all-time best lead characters imaginable.
Between half of damned Harlan being shot in California mountains, a US Marshal based in Lexington KY driving three hours to Harlan every episode, a complete lack of desire to flesh out Raylan's coworkers, some terribly awful villain of the weeks, these things were somewhat balanced out by some funny writing and affable evil guys like Duffy.
It never lived up to the potential a show with Boyd and Raylan could have been.

I think the issue is that the villain seems to be as idiotic as those guys, but he’s the big bad so he doesn’t get caught because lawyerz. He doesn’t really scheme very much or have much of a plan, it’s just sort of “what’s the most evil thing I can do right now” which always to just crash into the main plot of the show.
Which again I think would work fine with the Harlan backdrop and characters, you sort of expect in a small Kentucky town that everyone is connected to everyone in some way, but when everyone else seems to be taking the show extremely seriously in a much more lifeless urban setting, it comes off a bit out of place
At times it feels like they just dropped Raylan into an episode of NYPD blue
That being said it’s still an enjoyable hour of TV. Just missing the special sauce of the original

3rd Episode definitely better.
I wonder if the guy's Armenian family will be the villain's undoing?

I never thought about it like this but I can’t really disagree with much of your post. The show was very good and I enjoyed but now that mention it I think that you are correct that it had the potential to be much better.

I wish Mags had stuck around longer. Buck Compton with the Inspector Gadget gun sucked.
