I imagine back in those days, with those circumstances, and conditions, someone who was "slow" would probably be forced to keep up or be left behind. Kinda a "earn your keep" kinda thing. I'm sure they also needed every warm body with a gun.

Ellison "Cottontop" Mounts was the reputed illegitimate son of Ellison Hatfield and his first cousin Harriet Hatfield. Since most of the others around were products of cousin parents, they probably didn't notice anything wrong with him.

This is what learned from this series

1.McCoy’s will without a doubt cut a mother fricker

2.Hatfield’s are some ruthless bastards

3.Nancy was definitely a whore and down for whatever (Liked to party)

4.With the exception of ol’White Eye, Nobody can hit shite

5.Mrs. Hatfield is 1800’s MILF

My wife for some reason is sympathetic to Randall McCoy. I'm like frick him. Yeah, he lost a lot of his family. Frankly, everything after he sent those hired thugs out he brings on himself. I hate that his kids got killed when they burned down his house but IDGAF about his pain and anguish. He was awfully stupid to think that there would be no retribution for rounding up and killing Hatfields. And by the way, your sons were murderers. Good job raising them to hate Hatfields so much.

And frankly his constant preaching and praying to God is annoying. He really thinks in his fricked up inbred brain that he is just the poor victim of the ruthless Hatfields.

And I'm sure Devil Anse is not as much of a reluctant patriarch drug into the fight by unavoidable curcumstances as the show portrayed him. I don't really sympathize with him either. It does show something that the shite really got real when his brother was murdered and his side was the ones who finally said, we are done.

BTW, does everyone see how easy it is to keep every thought that pops into your head about a TV show in one thread?

I feel the same way.

Towards the end of the series, when McCoy kept blaming God and complaining that his sons were murdered I was like "get the frick over it, you delusional idiot."

They were killed, everyone who died in the feud, because of their own stupidity which unfortunately was bred into them by the Patriarchs of the families.

ETA: Over-all, I loved the entire series though. From what I've been reading on the WWW the past few days it seems History did a pretty good job of trying to stick to the facts.

Yeah, not exactly hot in real life. She's the old lady.

I would say, judging by that picture, Devil Anse would never be mistaken for Kevin Costner.

Bad Frank Phillips was an attorney as well. Along with Perry Cline it wasn't a grand portrayal of 19th century Appalachian lawyers.

I can see how you come away with that perspective after watching the last three nights, but they over-embellished the facts a good bit both ways. Randall was known to bitch, moan, and look to God and the authorities for every little thing, nothing was ever his fault. He also whipped the meanness into his boys. But he wasn't a broken down, drunk, raging lunatic at the end, although what happened at his cabin that New Years of 1888 was a lot worse than what they showed last night. His wife was severely beaten that night, almost to death, and both his son and daughter were doing nothing more than getting out of the burning house when they were shot to death. It's also been alleged that Cap shot Randall's daughter and let Cotton-top hang for it. That night alone was enough to drive a man over the top with hatred. As for Devil Anse Hatfield, he was pretty savvy when it came to making a living and getting his way, but he was also an outright thief at times. He was disliked by more than just the McCoys in the early days after the war, and had the Feds on his arse for shaky land dealings and tax evasion. He certainly wasn't this philosophical, pipe-smoking thinker you saw at all times during the series, but he damned sure didn't let anyone screw around with what was his, legally or not.

There are some really interesting books out there about this and other families that were feuding at the same time and place.

Johnsey was only so handsome because he was peddlin that moonshine apparently. He'd get those hoes so wasted they thought he was some kind of Greek God.

and after watching this series:
1.) Best TV I've seen in a long time.
2.) I can't really pick who I was in favor of overall but it seemed to swing quite a bit the entire series. I fricking hated the McCoys after they killed Devils brother, but I hated Jim Vance the entire series that's for sure...UNTIL last night when he went out like a true G. I know it does nothing to redeem the rest of his actions, but I certainly wouldn't expect him to act a hero and let his nephew try to get away. I figured if anything he'd use him as a sacrifice so that he could get away.
3.) Damn the irony. Poppy McCoy goes from Christian man with principles to old drunken psycho who rebukes God...and Devil Anse becomes the legit "christian, peaceful man with all the principles and wisdom" after starting out as pretty much a hustler that had a blood lust.
