I haven't seen someone more into a character than Ledger in a while and one that the audience actually likes.

Everyone was saying the exact same thing about Depp after the first Pirates movie. Just an observation. Same thing was said about Hopkins in the Silence of the Lambs. I'm sure there are many more movies that people felt this way about on the Sunday after the movie released.

Tom Hanks in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump also come to mind.

i don't know if you can actually read or not, but your statement basically agrees with what he wrote. he said he hadn't seen a performance like that in A WHILE then you went on your little rant. the movies and performances you listed were all quite a while ago though, so i'm not sure exactly why you're whining

TDK is currently #1 all time on IMDB. Doubt it will hold up but that's pretty crazy.

His death is only hype for this movie to the ignorant. Fact is since the 1st pic of him as the joker was released that was the beginning of the hype. It's when we saw what he was and could be. He is without a doubt the best villian in any movie ever. I bet everyone saying he isn't the best villian can't name a better one. MAYBE the guy from A Clockwork Orange.

My favorite part was when he got out of the truck and was saying..do it, do it, Hit me, hit me HIT ME...and the bat bike slid around him and he casually looked over his shoulder to watch batman crash!!

C'mon man. I liked it too, but best ever?

Hannibal Lecter
Darth Vader
Norman Bates
John Do
Keyser Soze
Dr. Christian Szell
Agent Smith

Not to say that these are all "matter of fact" better than Ledger's Joker, but they've all stood the test of time. Will Heath? Maybe, and I hope so, but I doubt that anyone will be saying he was the best 20 years from now.

It's a lot easier to name movies that became classics over time, than to name movies that were looked at less favorably as time went on...

TDK needs at least a couple of Oscar nods to really cement itself among the all time greats, but with Heath Ledger dying, the critical praise, the box office success, the ultimate in what makes a movie endure: praise from the fans...this movie is going to hold up.

All of those villain you named were incredible...that's what makes Ledger's so great. This Joker will go down as good as any one those...if not better than some. He will go down as one of the top five villains...ever.

I will not be disappointed if that happens. I just think we need the distance of time to truly put it in perspective.

Disagree. Shawshank was snubbed by Oscar but still makes more top 5 lists than any other film I've seen.

By nods, I meant it just needs some nominations...Shawshank had seven Oscar nominations.

Ah. I still don't think Oscar attenton is necessary for greatness. The Oscars have become a joke anyway.

Just saw it, great movie, top 20 or so for Sci-Fi but I don't see myself watching this more than maybe 2 times.

As far as I know I've only seen Ledger in 2 movies The Patriot and this.

I thought the Patriot sucked, besides Brokeback what were his best roles before this?

Spoiler answer: from a few pages ago.

Gordon said that he faked death to protect his family.

A line I like to quote from that movie that no one ever knows where it's from:
"I'm thinking of getting a Tercel...yeah, that's a Toyota."

best pickup line ever.

I was actually joking...it's a teen angst high school flick with Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt all pretty much in their first movie roles. It's surprisingly entertaining, but I'm sure there's better Ledger movies to watch.

Monster's Ball and Lords of Dogtown were pretty good.
