The White House's vision is perhaps a prelude to the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, which will go before Congress later this year. The bill would make P2P or BitTorrent client development a criminal offense if the distributed software was used for infringement. It also implements an interesting provision called "imminent infringement", which allows the government to charge people who they think might be about to infringe with a civil offense (for example if you searched "torrent daft punk"). This is among the first official "thought crime" provisions to be proposed by the U.S. government.

This is unbelievable. Absolutely un"Fn"believable.

I hope they don't consult user history, because I'm definitely a target of interest if they do. I think about 75% of my searches have the word "torrent" in them.

Even if they do start making some headway, I say it's a fat chance that they get people to start buying CDs again. They can't sue everyone...

He uploaded a four cd set of pirated music last year.

That's like an O-T poster who admits to shoplifting, bitching about Mayor Holden asking the police and judges to not let thieves off the hook when they get busted stealing shite from the store

care to explain?

i agree the search is a little extreme, but i doubt that becomes an enforcable law. but they do need something extreme to stop the free downloads.

as for DRM, how many times do you really copy your music?

Ain't this guy great ? This is not about the RIAA or "piracy", it's about an end run around the web to shut down sites that don't agree w/ them.

Well...when you are dealing with intellectual property thats fricking theft in my book.

You cant clone an apple or lawnmower.

Whatever helps you sleep. It is theft. You are taking something that does not belong to you.

Interestingly, the statements seem to fly in the face of a recent Government Accountability Office study released to U.S. Congress earlier this year, which concluded that there is virtually no evidence for the claimed million dollar losses by the entertainment industry. That study suggested that piracy could even benefit the economy.

Another noteworthy study from three years back notes that virtually every citizen violates intellectual property laws in some way on a daily basis.

again, it's not like taking a squash. It's like cloning a squash in a few seconds and taking it home. the squash is still there.

is it wrong? yes. but it's justified in my head. If I hadnt illegally downloaded a lot of music, I wouldnt know about these bands and would never have bought tix to their shows. Musicians make way more money from concerts than off CD's.

How is concert revenue doing? I'd imagine it's doing well and it's BECAUSE of piracy
