Like all the good movies in its genre, Halaloween, the Muslim horror film festival, is back with a sequel — and this year, it’s free to stream online.

The film festival, hosted by the Global Islamic Studies Center at the University of Michigan, got its start in 2019 when the university’s chair of Middle East studies, Karla Mallette, then-director of the GISC, wondered if the horror genre even existed in the Muslim world. Are filmmakers in predominantly Muslim countries making horror films? What do Muslims even think about horror films?

As it turns out, the genre does exist, and its films are as varied as the cultures that produce them, according to Aliyah Khan, who now directs the GISC.

There are Turkish slasher movies and Iranian vampire films. There are movies about jinn possession from Indonesia and Malaysia and movies dealing with the supernatural from Morocco.

There aren’t many zombie movies — although festival organizers found one from Malaysia this year — perhaps because American zombie films grow out of perceptions of Vodou, said Khan, and ideas about “the living dead and the undead don’t strike Muslims as particularly Muslim or Islamic.”

“It’s really interesting just to think about what each part of the world thinks is important or thinks qualifies as horror,” she said.

Gonna go ahead and guess that most of the monsters turn out to be from Israel or something.

Baskin is a pretty good movie. Not sure I would call it a slasher though.

How do you get to be the chair of an academic department like that without having spent some time abroad and noting the culture of your academic discipline?

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night was OK. Not sure if it was truly Iranian, since the filmmaker is an expat.

So, would the “other” version of Halloween movies that isn’t Muslim be classified as caucasian movies then?

And, is their Asian, Mexican, and black hollowed movies?

I have seen some Indian (dot) stuff and it’s actually freaking awesome! The special effects are so funny that it makes it even better

Also, if you want to learn about horror films in Indonesia (a Muslim country) watch this:

Popular culture in the Islamic World may not have been her specialty. I could see someone who had spent most of her life studying a certain historical period suddenly becoming interested in this aspect of culture.

I suppose. I just think it’s interesting to want to study a culture, rising to the chair of an academic department on that culture, and not having explored that culture’s popular entertainment.

Every movie is about the horror of living in a free Afghanistan and watching as Joe Biden allows the Taliban to kill your friends and destroy everything you love?

Well, one could certainly write plenty of nonfiction horror stories involving Moozlims. A lot of material there.

That they beat The Babylon Bee to this is mystifying.
