The powerhouse directors, along with DC animated universe veteran Bruce Timm, have received a straight-to-series order for Batman: Caped Crusader from HBO Max and Cartoon Network. The series is billed as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology.”

“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” said Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Reeves (The Batman) in a statement. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

For Timm, the project is a return to an animated world he helped establish with 1995’s acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series.

“Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans,” said Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register. “It is in that spirit that we are bringing together three master storytellers in J.J., Matt and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue in the same groundbreaking legacy.”

More show details from the release: “Utilizing state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies available, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.”

Will Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill be reprising their voice roles?

That will mean a lot to me.

In today's world, this sounds ominous.

I'm torn here.

J. J. Abrams hiring Coates to write the new Superman movie is a big issue for me. Likewise, this line, "reimagining of the Batman mythology" which is never good any more.

However, it's great news that Bruce Timm is involved. Optimistic, but very cautiously so.

I so can't wait to not watch this! If it had been live action I would have given it a shot. This might sound Boomer-ish but I'm too old for cartoons.

Next year. It seems like Reeves is all in on doing nothing but batman projects now. We have the film, the tv show and now animated shows.

That's fair. For me, it's just passing down my Batman fandom to my 14 year old.

Pretty high bar.

They also have a new Superman/Lois/Jimmy animated series coming to HBO Max. Young characters at the start of their careers. That cute Ameri-Anime style they're doing now.

Kevin Conroy is Batman to those of us who grew up with the cartoon. If he’s not voicing, I hope it’s Jensen Ackles - he’s my favorite non-Conroe Batman voice.

Bruce Timm is great, but JJ will find a way to frick this up.

Probably:

Batman/Jensen Ackles
Joker/ Troy Baker

Thats who they are currently using since Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. They reset the universe after this.

Am I the only one completely unimpressed with most of JJ Abrams' work? I've found most of his stuff to be highly disappointing.

That used to be good news but hasn’t he had some swing and misses lately?

Timm was involved with that Batman and Harley debacle that seemed to have been written by a middle school boy who enjoys fart jokes and girl on boy rape fantasies.
