8 pages?
She definitely didn't drop it on purpose. She's not a worthless bitch, like Kit, so she didn't do it on purpose.

Yes. They just refuse to agree with me. Or at least admit that they have no evidence to feel like they do.
Plus it is Christmas and the base here is a ghost town and I have nothing better to do.

There's only one thing I need to know: if Dottie dropped it on purpose, she's a terrible person.
Kit doesn't want to win because something is given to her...(that contradicts the story arc of her struggle to overcome her sister's shadow) and Dottie's teammates and Tom Hanks sure as hell don't want to lose the championship to make Kit feel better...not to mention the man who is paying Dottie to perform.
So if Dottie drops it on purpose, that makes her a terrible person who is such an egomaniac...she decides what's best for those counting on her.
It ruins the movie...was that Penny Marshall's intention on the commentary? Did she mention she wanted to ruin her movie out of spite after the fact?

quote:That's why I don't put any credit into those comments if in fact she made them. Is Dumledore gay just because JK decided that years after writing the book and killing him off he needed to be gay? No, of course not. Because nothing in the books or the movies would lead you to a conclusion one way or another on his sexuality. It is just some BS that she came up with after the fact. Marshall may have made those comments because it makes her feel good to think that way now, but nothing in the movie backs her up.

No, it doesn't ruin the movie. Dottie knows she's the superior athlete, but she also knows how much it means to her loser sister to have this win. Dottie's already an accomplished, well adjusted person. She doesn't need the satisfaction of being the hero of the moment. What would have ruined the movie is if later on Dottie had said "hey, I dropped that ball on purpose." But that didn't happen. Instead, both characters win. Kit gets to live her whole life with the belief that she bested her big sister in the big moment, and Dottie gets to live her life in altruistic joy knowing she helped her little sister get over the hump and gave her confidence to be the best she can be. This story is repeated in so many movies.

In my defense, I don't think I jumped in until page 5.
ETA: Nevermind, page 3. Like I said, it's a slow day here.

To all the people in the "she dropped it on purpose camp" - please watch this and point out your defense for that position...because the only thing relevant is what we see on the film.
Yet people still swear that Tony Soprano was shot dead in the finale based on innuendo, perceived tension, and scene set up. What we see on film is that he is alive as it cuts to black...end of story right??? WRONG. The storytelling suggests that Dottie dropped the ball on purpose even though there may be no visual evidence. The dropping of the ball on purpose was implied based on Dottie's realizations and character develpment throughout the film.

-Dottie came back to the series for the 7th and final game. The assumption is that she came back because she wanted to win, not make sure here little sister's ego get a boost. If you want to call that speculation, then okay. But she did come back for the 7th game.
-Dottie is facing Kit in the top of the 9th and hits in 2 go ahead runs against her little sister. Logic will tell you that if she wanted to let her sister win, she could have done it here. But she didn't.
-When Kit is up to bat, Dottie tells Ellen Sue that she can't lay off of the high ones. Again the logical conclusion here is she wants her to strike out, and isn't trying to boost her ego.
-So Kit hits the ball, ties the game, but knowing there will be a play at the plate, still advances toward home ignoring the 3rd base coach. Dottie doesn't realize this until she has already rounded third base and is heading home.
-At this point, if Dottie wanted her to win, she could let the throw home get by her or bobble the ball around a little; but instead she makes a clean catch and turns to face Kit with the intention of tagging her.
The Soprano's ending is meant to be ambiguous. Just like the ending to Inception.

Is this out of the realm of discussion?
It seems like as logical a conclusion as any.
Of course it's not out of the realm of discussion. I just stated that that would be the response, which is absolutely laughable and not supported by anything.

She made the decision as she saw her baby sister. . .hence the montage.
What f'ing montage are you talking about?

Real life Dottie?
Real life Kit?
Real life Kit?

I think she did too. Otherwise the shot of her seeing Kit cry was pointless. And Jimmy gave her a look as if he knew she did.

Oh really? You mean the scene of Kit crying in the dugout? The scene that was followed by Dottie calling time to run out to the mound and instruct her pitcher exactly how to strike Kit out?

I watched this movie last night.
I thought of this thread and really watched from all angles. I studied the drop more than Jim Garrison studied the zapruder film.
I rewinded and rewinded. Dottie dropped the ball back and to the left. Back and to the left. Back and to the left.
Dottie dropped it.
But NOT on purpose.
She was too stone faced. Telling Ella Sue to throw Kit the high fast balls. Lasers for eyes.
When Kit railed her, she dropped it. The reason she smiled was because she saw how happy her sister was. And that gave her a sense of peace. Good things can come from bad.
Dottie didn't drop it on purose.
Dottie played to win the game.
She played to win the DAMN game.
