Is there a compelling reason why the character can't grow by dropping the ball accidential? Can't she come to the conclusions that lead to growth by losing, rather than tanking? Why can't she just lose and after that, realize the same lessons that let her character grow?

The scene earlier in the movie showed that Dottie could hold onto the ball.
Not the same as getting trucked with the last game on the line for the championship.
And yes.. See Wes Welker.

Nope, you have it backwards. You think your expertice makes you right in all cases. Now in something like interperting literature/movies, its no big deal, but in mnay other aspects, just trusting "experts" has had disasterous results, over and over and over again.
Not applicable. This is fallacious reasoning.

Im sorry man. Everything about this is just wrong.

Dropped on purpose. Went against her own nature to rescue her sister's self-esteem which had suffered (albeit unintentionally) at her hand , blah, blah. Already had everything she wanted, so feels she needs to help Kit excel at something, yada-yada.
there is an actual debate on this? no way!

Again why would she have made the trip to the mound to give the advice. Then finally the outfielder hit the cut off person on the relay. And she's just going to screw her teammates she came back for? No way. That same play and ending happens if Kit was still on her team.
I believe she would want her sister to earn it.. which she did.
I even went into the movie thinking it was going to be on purpose. The entire movie can appear to set up for it.. but she had too much character. I just can't see it. Watching the play unfold as it did I just don't feel it was on purpose. At all.
People try to say oh well the movie was about Geena Davis' character, not Kit.. etc.. and so on.. but that doesn't mean it can't end like that.
From a storyteller's perspective it doesn't make narrative sense for her to just let Kit win. The point of the story was that Kit was always second fiddle to Dottie. Dottie was better at everything, and Dottie GOT Kit everything (on the train, in the league, etc). The ending was supposed to symbolize Kit getting it on her own. Even the end shows this ("You wanted it more then me, you did what you had to do.") Dottie was not the type to just bow down like that. Never. She didn't love the game and she wanted out, but she had too much character to do her teammates and even her own sister like that. She was too honorable to drop the ball on purpose. It happens. She was due for a mess up.
Seriously I don't care how long this is. Why did Dottie do everything possible to win this game, including trying to get her own sister to K only to tank at the very last second. I agree the game didn't even mean anything to her.. but she was a competitor. Period. Bottom line, her sister wanted the game more, and Dottie would never have thrown the game like that.
She didn't come back to lose. She did everything to win! If she wanted her sister to move on with her life she wouldn't have shown back up final game.. If she hadn't come back in the first place they aren't even in position to win.

She dropped it on purpose.
Too bad we will never know.

She definitely did NOT drop it purposefully. Why would she have told the pitcher to throw high fastballs if she wanted to let Kit be the hero? Makes no sense to say she dropped it on purpose.
