ery little to do with fast metabolisms or being predisposed to being overweight.

it's calories in versus calories out, period
This is a little facile. It's quite related to the types of calories consumed. These 500 pounders eating a diet that is 70%+ carbs is the problem. Their cells literally believe they are close to starving despite their weight. That's one reason why Dr. N immediately puts them on a carb-restricted diet - to try to start slowly turning the clock back on the insulin-pummeling their cells have been exposed to - as well as decreasing their appetite since their cells are no longer tricked.

I've watched for years and this season is different. James (a couple of weeks ago) was the worst I've ever seen. His father refinances his house to get him the money to take a medical transport down to Houston, he spends a month in the hospital, then when he's released, he GAINS 128 pounds in, like, a month or two. He never even got the surgery.

I understand this, but at the end of the day...for 99.99% of people in the world.

CICO rules all

and I simply reject the notion of people being "naturally thin" and morbidly obese people becoming that way simply because of bad genetics

To me, that's like saying unwanted pregnancy is 99.99% dick in, dick out...while disregarding the role that alcohol consumption in social settings plays. Sure, it's literally true - just not overly helpful.

Yeah, that part is junk science - at least beyond just the margin. I can easily believe that 2 people eating the same diet can have one skinny person and one "regular" overweight person. But metabolic genetics certainly is not the explanation for 1000 pounders. Rather, it's deeply emotionally damaged people with no understanding of what to eat.

I thought he was the worst I had seen until this week. Steven and his brother are so far out there I don't think they have a shot at being saved

At first he ate one slice in front of his dad and said he was full just to piss off his dad then once he received a caregiver he made his dad order the pizzas and started doing painkillers again

One negative change in the show has been they show way less progress than in the 1st season. Now, the people are so troubled, they often don't lose anything, even by month 12.

Extreme Weight Loss is a much better show. They actually work their asses off instead of wallowing in shite for an hour.

I've only seen a couple of episodes and really like it.

Have the participants been as obese as the people dr. N performs bariatric surgery on.

I was flipping channels and for some reason I stopped on this for about 15 minutes.
I think it was the episode mentioned where the guy is in the hospital and keeps getting kicked out.
These people eat so much food they really seem to have zero desire to actually lose weight.
