There were cell phones when the Matrix was made and were heavily prominent in the film. Morpheus actually sends one to Neo in the film and Neo runs with one to get directions. A landline is required to leave the Matrix.

Jurrasic Park- power goes out, just call people on their cell phones
Dodson could have done better than a shaving cream can.
Timmy probably would have been carrying around an iPad pulling up all kinds of random dinosaur facts during the tour, and googling how to survive a dinosaur attack. Meanwhile his dorky sister wouldn't have had to navigate such an ancient file system to lock the doors when the raptors were trying to get in. Clearly Ctrl + F did not exist back then.

Certain words relating to the Normandy invasion - "Overload", "Neptune", "Omaha", "Utah", "Mulberry" - started to show up in the crossword puzzle in the Daily Telegraph newspaper. MI5 went crazy, thought that somehow the plan was being leaked to the Germans via the crossword.
Yeah, I'm reading The Steel Wave now and have thought a few dozen times "I can't believe the Germans didn't know about D-day in advance". Pretty amazing even in 1944.
It turns out that the man who compiled the crossword, Leonard Dawe, was the headmaster at Strand School. He would often ask current or former students for words to include in the puzzle, and apparently the students heard the various Allied troops tossing about the different words and they picked them up and brought them back for inclusion in the puzzles.

I think she had a cell phone but couldn't get service through the walls.

Ok. Wait Until Dark doesn't hold up at all...unless they stole her cell phone before she first arrived home. They could have also been more reclusive instead outside in a phonebooth across the lane.

The Net...with today's internet.
shite I don't even think The Net made sense with 1995's internet.
I'm pretty sure CyberBob got a visit from Chris Hanson sometime around 2001 though.

this has me thinking that 'early comical portrayals of the internet in film' would be an awesome thread

true, cause they don't have devises that can block cell phones.
The premise of this thread is fricking stupid. If WWII happened now, it would be different. Its like people asking "how did people met up before cell phones/fb" etc. People adapt to technology. Or Take a movie like The Sting, it was made in the 70's, but set in the 30's. The premise at the end (I won't spoil it for those that haven't seen it) was obsolete by the time it was made.

she had a cell phone in the movie. doesn't do you much good if you don't take it into the room.

The book mentions that but doesn't explain how the words got there. Thanks, that is interesting.
If the 1944 Daily Telegraph crossword puzzle included "cell phone" that would be fascinating.

**that is if the bots had towers erected for the humans to use.
They had cell phones in the Matrix, but only land lines connect you back to the real world.
ETA: someone got it before I finished reading the thread

What about the movie Twister? I feel like the technology they spent the whole movie trying to employ is likely wayyyy obsolete by now. But I can't say for sure.

Network. Because everyone already knows the news of the day before the evening broadcast.
