I really don’t know if there is a way for a film to surpass a book given that you only have 2-3 hours to pack in as much as you can. Even making a book or book series into a multi-part tv series cant capture everything (think GOT)

The few examples I gave were based on the fact that I enjoyed watching the movie more than I did reading the book.

Blade Runner is one of my all time favorite movies but Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was a bit of a chore to read. It wasnt a big book, but it just didnt flow and the main characters werent as intriguing as they were on screen.

Although Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is a 10x better name. Wish they would have named the movie that.

I take it you are referring to Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" as "the book", as it is what Apocalypse Nowis based on.

Yes. I've always felt it was fair, given that the filmmakers credit it and the essential theme and plot are identical, just cast in (at the tine) a modern setting.

Part of what I like about Apocalypse Now is how it nails the transition to a different time and place. I think both book and movie are great, but when you stack up the basic themes, Apocalypse Now actually hit them better than Heart of Darkness, in my opinion.

Vietnam was the perfect setting for exploring the same theme and setup, and Apocalyse Now knocks it out of the park. Heart of Darkness hits a homer too, but it's about 25 feet shorter.

Shawshank Redemption (novella)

Yep. The story wasn't very memorable.

The Stand
Not sure if serious. The mini series for "The Stand" was terrible.

I really want them to make a version of The Stand that will do the book justice.

The Right Stuff

Books that have been made into TV shows - GoT, they are going to finish the story at least.

Edit: Band of Brothers

The Princess Bride

All of the little asides in the book really screw up the flow and make it terrible imo. I don't like reading a book with a narrator.

Nobody has mentioned Game of Thrones yet? So many opportunities with that one...
