I Am Legend

Other than the name of the lead character...

To bad, because a faithful version of Matheson's book would be fantastic.

Eragon

Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy (bears a lot of resemblance, but they changed several character/stoy arcs that ruined any possibilities for the sequal novels)

That's like saying LeBron James resembles Jackie Joyner Kersey because, hey, they're both black!

Starship Troopers was a ghastly abomination.

The book is one of the better things written in the 20th century; the movie is a slightly-above average sci-fi with boobs.

No, it's shitty sci-fi with shitty acting, cheesy dialog and lots of titties. It's so bad it's good.

I RA'd.

The only way that differs from average sci-fi is Titties. So, slightly above average stands-- unless they were bad titties, and I do not believe they were.

Which version, though? The 1975 Richard Chamberlin version was much more book-like than the 2002 version.

The Postman deviates from David Brin's novel in some pretty drastic ways.

There seems to be a common thread here: scifi movies seem to take the most liberties with the source material.

Oh...here's one that's not scifi, Practical Magic.

The movie doesn't show a lot of the main characters who were fantastic in the book, and comes nowhere near close to showing the deeper levels of planning that Dantes used in plotting his revenge, and it takes away a lot from the overall experience.

People who never read the book never got the full experience, so I guess they'd enjoy the revenge anyway.

I know they couldn't fit all of that book into the movie, it's just that the two simply don't compare.
