critics did not like it all when it first came out, I think Melville actually went into a depression over the general reception of the book

Book critics in the 19th Century have a lot in common with modern day movie critics. The pretentiousness is palpable.

Have you read Moby Dick? Not the Cliff Notes version, but the whole thing.

Of course I have. Read it the first time as a Junior in high school and wrote a report on it. Read it several times since. Yes its long, but I enjoy it. I'm sorry that you don't.

I hated Great Expectations, but that doesn't mean I think its terrible and Dickens is a hack.

If it counts as "a movie", Boardwalk Empire and nothing else is close.

The book is like a long Life magazine article. Lots of detail, no style.

I've got a friend that is a Tolkien freak and hated the LoR movies the first time he saw them.

Yep, I really like the book, but it's amazing how the movie frames my opinion oabout it. I just ignore all the Vegas stuff with the doctor and the maid of honor in the book that didn't make the movie.

I can't agree with that and I like the movie a lot. But the movie is missing the back story for Sheriff Bell and the book is just exceptionally well written. My favorite audio book for sure.

I'll go with Star Wars. There actually is a book, written by a fairly well known sci-fi author and it came out before the movie. It's pretty bad.

Not neccessarily books, but in the same vein as the Stephen King short stories, Phillip K Dick wrote a bunch of sci-fi short stories that were eventually turned into some pretty badass movies. Total Recall, Blade Runner and Minority Report come to mind..

But was the book a licensing deal from the movie? Pretty sure Star Wars was original material.

Ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster. Was not an original work, it was based off of Lucas' original screenplay.

Plot differences are listed here.
