Intellectual or thought-provoking? Am I wrong if I think those are different?

Here's a list of thought-provoking movies off the top of my head; I wouldn't consider many of these to be intellectual at all:

Waking Life
Pi
The Fountain
Solyaris
Stalker
Man Bites Dog
Logan's Run ( )
Slacker
Inland Empire
A Scanner Darkly
Mulholland Drive
Adaptation
Altered States
Naked Lunch
Lost HIghway
The Holy Mountain
El Topo
Eraserhead
Brazil
Crash (Cronenberg)
eXistenZ
Synecdoche, New York
Alphaville
Blue Velvet
If...

I can always count on Blue Velvet to deliver an answer that doesn't make me want to strangle puppies.

He kind of depresses me though. Whenever I feel like I'm an expert on film, its either him or Constant Cough that comes in and makes me feel like a fricking amateur.

I don't consider intellectual or thought provoking to necessarily be good qualities for a movie. I can't even think of a good one.

I have seen almost all of those.

But I still think Cabin in the Woods and A Clockwork Orange belong on there

Cabin in the Woods was pretty odd, but not intellectual. Thought provoking in a wtf is going on kinda way. I liked it though.

The Battle of Algiers anybody with a hankering to get our troops involved in colonial wars should be required to watch it.
