I'm not trying to knight for the guy, he was a total dumbass and payed for it. It's just different from the cliche hollywood ending. When the parents got the news and broke down, it disturbed me a bit.

He didn't have the skills to catch enough food to eat to sustain himself - the movie blames the berries with toxins but that was never proven with toxicology - in fact the opposite was proven.

He apparently didn't know he was within 5 miles of help up the river. His adventures may have been careless but I doubt toward the end he was mentally imbalanced enough to starve by choice.
