what i couldn't understand is why anyone would cast Kirstie Alley and Rosanne Barr in anything, much less together in the same movie.

Not only did I not get it, but even after I read the theories behind it, it STILL completely sucked. Horrible horrible movie, IMO.

Southland Tales...actually it isn't so much confusing as it doesn't make any fricking sense whatsoever.

I saw this again last night ... still no fricking idea what's going on at the end.

Here, maybe this will clear things up...

I've seen this movie 2 times and I still don't really understand what was going on. I still like the idea behind the movie and I also like how it was shot and the dialogue between the characters. I'm going to watch it again with the utterly confusing image above in front of me so I can see if I can figure it out.

It is my favorite movie, ever. Yes, is does take some deciphering, but it is great, hence the Best Oscar Nomination.

In a nutshell, the very beginning is the main actor going to sleep after she realizes the hitman she hired has killed the girl she loves. The next most of the film is a dream concocted by the main character, and her dream is about what she thought being an actor in LA would be like (which of course is not how it played out in real life). At the end she feels guilt (her grandparents coming to see her) and she wakes up and shoots/kills herself.

It is really not that hard to figure out.

Well, it's well within your rights for it to be your favorite movie, but I thought it was terrible. I wanted to turn it off after 10 minutes, but couldn't imagine the acting getting any worse.

Since you tend to know a lot about this movie, any truth to Mulholland Drive originally being a pilot for a TV show, it getting scrapped, and then they just made a movie around the premise?

If so, it would seriously explain how it went from totally PG (no cussing at all, blatantly avoiding using R language) to going full on R/NC-17 with the nudity and lesbian action.

Horrible movie. Could not believe they got so many big named actors to be in this gigantic pile of feces.

To each is own, correct. I like movies that make me think "WTH did I just see", so maybe that is just me. favorite movies are: MD, Ordinary People, and Eyes Wide Shut.

Im pretty sure it was supposed to be a TV show/series. Like you said it was turned down and made into a movie. If you like lynch/things that make you think, check out the TV show from 1990 called "Twin Peaks", it is a cool little murder mystery show.

The PG part you are thinking of was the main actress' "dream of being an actor", thus, everything was perfect and peachy. The NC-17 part her manifestation of her real-life with the other actor/lover.

It is a very symbolic movie lol. Even I dont know what everything stands for, but i like watching it to figure it out a few times a year

The first one that comes to mind for me is There Will Be Blood.

I know a LOT of people love it but I was confused b/c 1)what's the story & 2)why all the hype? I only know of 1 person who actually enjoyed this movie & they are a bit of a pretentious intellectual. So I'm not sure if they really enjoyed it or just want to be "smart enough to understand the true meaning".

I understood There Will Be Blood, but did not enjoy it at all. Daniel Day Lewis is probably one of the greatest character actors alive and I am sure he played his part to perfection. I just thought the movie was boring.

Watch it again.

I would watch it.
Then read the wiki on it, then study the chart, then watch it again.
The wiki actually does a good job of explaining the basics behind the theory.

I haven't seen it on DVD, but I'm pretty sure it does have commentary.

I read the Wiki on it and I'm pretty sure it referred to the commentary for some of it's explanations.
