I concur with your buddy. The boot camp scenes from the first half of FMJ are spot on. When Gunny Highway takes over the Recon platoon in Heartbreak Ridge is realistic when dealing with sh!tbirds after bootcamp.

If you want to see the real thing, there is a stunning film that just doesn't get enough love on here - Restrepo (2010).

I served with one of the soldiers who was one of the main people in Restrepo. He was just an E3 during filming of it, cool guy.

As far as movies, there is a newer one called Outpost with Scott Eastwood. One of the closest movies to Afghanistan that I've seen.

My uncle went through Marine Corps basic at Parris Island in 1967. He said the boot camp scenes in FMJ were spot-on accurate. He said those DI's were some of the meanest motherfrickers who ever dwelled upon this planet.

That’s an impressive board. CSM has much more of my respect than the rank of General.

If your dad was still with us I’d love to buy him a cup of coffee and sit and listen (if he was willing to talk). I’m an Army Vet myself. Only 4 yrs and never saw combat.

My FIL died of the same. He worked on nuclear subs while in the Navy. It was rough watching what that did to a strong proud man.

Thank you, the best man I ever knew and one I will never live up to.

He never made to CSM because his officers didn't want to lose him.

28 years he served, his third tour in Vietnam was turned down, and let's say he used some creative measures to go back, a lot of young men owe their lives to him today. I have a ton of stories from his days serving some funny some not.

Generation Kill is pretty decent

Probably about as realistic as Warfare since it actually had an actual Recon Marine that played himself in the mini-series. Even though it was based on a book by Evan Wright of Rolling Stone Magazine who embeded in with a Recon platoon during the initial invasion, it was based on actual real-life Marines, which I found very odd since it didn't exactly paint some of the officers and senior enlisted in a good light. Very surprised the upper echelon of the USMC even greenlighted the production since they completely balked on Heartbreak Ridge. I actually heard they showed this at Pendleton and one of the officers that was in this thing was there and threw a gasket to shut it down.

While it's a tv show, not a movie, I've had a few Vietnam vets tell me that Tour of Duty was a pretty good representation of how things were there.

The carrier scenes on The Hunt For Red October were pretty good. I was on my first WESTPAC when they came aboard to film. Got to watch Alec Baldwin film some flight deck scenes that were apparently cut out. John McTiernan was always good about getting the look and feel of places right.
