Nah, I read the books a few times before the movies were ever made.
The movies do a piss-poor job with these two hobbits, Merry in particular.
Reading the books, Merry seems like the guy in his upper 20's, ready to guide and lead. Pippin is the guy who might have just graduated from high school, eager but clueless. He wants to be Merry when he grows up.
Sam's totally lost, but as long as Frodo has to do it, he's there for anything.

Hobbits "come of age" at 33 (vs. our 18) and live about 100 years (vs our +/-70). Converting to human aging, Frodo would have been late-30s or early-40s, Sam would have been mid- or late-20s, Merry would have been early- to mid-20s, and Pippin would have been a teen (maybe 16).
At least, that is how I saw them in the books.
