Just showed it to my son for the first time. Really wishing that we would have gotten a series based on the books and not just a single film. Frickin’ 50 Shades, Hunger Games, and Divergent all got a trilogy, and this series is limited to one movie that is actually great...sad.

Probably my favorite movie. Not long ago Roussel Crowe made a tweet implying there is something in the works, but who knows.

Had LOTR: ROTK been released another year, this film would have swept the Oscars. Still can’t believe Crowe and Bethany didn’t score Oscar noms.

Absolutely needed a sequel. Such a great movie and left us with an open ending...

They expected to do this, it just didn't make enough money. People would rather watch stupid Pirates crap.

Great movie though. Excellent book series as well.

Having read the books, which are fantastic, I wanted to see at least a sequel or two. It would make an excellent tv series.

This is such a fantastic movie that was completely overshadowed the year it came out and then forgotten.

I'd put it in a top movies of the 2000s list.

I love that movie. Here's an interesting piece about the behind the scenes business of getting the movie made and why they weren't able to make it into a franchise.

Bettany is one of my favorite actors and he’s never been nominated. Kind of strange honestly.

I checked on the Oscars that year and there were some really good noms, but I do think both should have gotten in:

Supporting Actor:

*Tim Robbins - Mystic River
Alec Baldwin - The Cooler
Benicio Del Toro - 21 Grams
Djimon Hounsou - In America
Ken Watanabe - The Last Samurai

As much as I love Bettany that is a damn good list of nominees honestly. I’d probably rank Robbins last on that list, thought his accent was silly, but he won so obviously he wasn’t getting left off. Maybe over Baldwin as that was just kind of a scenery chewing role but those often do well in Supporting categories.

The rest were great, just a tough category.

Actor:

*Sean Penn - Mystic River
Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean
Bill Murray - Lost in Translation
Ben Kingsley - House of Sand and Fog
Jude Law - Cold Mountain

I’d put Crowe in over Law for sure, didn’t like Cold Mountain at all, and probably even Kingsley, thought Sand and Fog wasn’t great either. The other three are well deserving imo.

I’d actually even say Tom Cruise was deserving as well for Samurai.

I wonder if Pirates coming out the same year hurt the awards prospects of a serious naval epic like M&C as the popularity of a lighter film like Pirates made it seem less of an accomplishment.

Serious naval period pieces are extremely difficult to pull off so it’s unfortunate they came out so close together.

The original Pirates was also really a pretty good action/adventure movie. It’s the plethora of sequels that have watered it down over time

Yeah I agree, I love the original and I also think Depp deserved his nomination.

I was just saying the seeing a more family friendly “pirate movie” come out and be so successful and popular might have taken some of the “wind out of the sails”, if you will, for a historical epic like M&C when it came to awards and recognition.

Just bad timing for what otherwise may have been a favorite among awards candidates in most other years

Love this movie. Agree that there should have been a sequel due to the way it ended.
