the original cast was. Trapper, Frank Burns, and Henry were all great. Better writing and jokes and they never got high handed.

Yup. It wasn't until Alda started taking over that it went downhill. It was one of the longest-running shows, but I think it wouldn't have lasted half the time if it had had the competition today's shows have.

Yeah, Sutherland, Gould, Duvall, Skeritt, and Kellerman, and Co. were incredible.

I loved Trapper & Henry.
As to their replacements, Potter was ok, but BJ flat out sucked as a character. Not funny, always whining about “Peg and Erin”.
The first three seasons of the show were as good as any in television history. Then it limped along for a couple of seasons until the end of Season 5 when Margaret got married and Larry Linville (Frank) left the show. It was all downhill after that.
All that being said, I still own all 11 seasons on DVD. One of the jewels of my collection.

The first 3 seasons were gold, but you can see the way the writers began to make it all about Hawkeye as time went on. Very few Trapper centered episodes. Hawkeye given the best lines. Even in some of the laugh scenes, Alda takes over the top to steal the scene. Still a great show.
Potter was a very solid replacement. Margaret/Frank being broken up was stupid.

I still wonder why Alan Alda was given center stage. Prior to MASH, how big of a star was he? He certainly wasn't any bigger than Wayne Rogers.

henry was the best. i can't stand frank though. he's tough to watch. i prefer the episodes with charles.

Trapper and Henry were my favorite. It was all about Hawkeye though for all 11 seasons. They chased Rogers away.

The early seasons were the best, but Potter was my favorite character in the whole show.

Alda was much better known than Wayne Rogers and Stevenson was actually a bigger “star” than either of them. both the book and the movie feature all characters pretty equally...the book is the story of “three army doctors”, Hawkeye, Duke and trapper
they dropped the duke character for the show and elevated Henry Blake to equal billing. When it evolved into the Alan Alda show is when the other 2 wanted out

quote:These are both incorrect. Alda was a much bigger name than either. He'd even played the lead in a feature, Paper Lion. Creator/producer Larry Gelbart said he was surprised they could get Alda

Stevenson was establishing himself as a TV second banana, but he was hardly a star. And Rogers was playing small roles, even bits -- and he may have gotten those only through his IRL status as "Investment Counselor to The Stars". Rogers pops up In several Paul Newman films in this period. I wonder if that could be connected to his financial career?

If I remember, Paper Lion was a made for TV movie. Not exactly A-list stuff. He certainly wasn't so big of a star that you'd automatically center the show around him at the expense of the other members of the ensemble. It'd be like claiming someone who made a couple Hallmark Channel movies today is a big star.

Paper Lion wasn’t a TV movie. It was a theatrical release. Alda had the lead in The Mephisto Waltz and some other roles as well. He was also a Tony nominated Broadway actor. He wasn’t Dustin Hoffman, but he was a name actor. More so than the rest of the original cast.

I think that Frank was vastly underrated as a character. I also believe the first three seasons are absolute comic gold.
