Set in the early 1980s in a world rather, but not entirely, like our own, “Mandy” tells the story of a couple, Red (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy (Andrea Riseborough), living at a far remove from society. Mandy is abducted by a cult, led by Jeremiah Sands (Linus Roache), who can actually summon demons. She meets an awful fate, and Red, possessed by grief and rage, becomes her bloody avenger. These days, I find the narrative convention of the abducted and violated woman unappetizing. In defense of its use here, I believe that Mr. Cosmatos treats the horrific events with sincere gravity and without male-gaze sadism. Ms. Riseborough creates a character both ethereal and defiant; Mr. Roache channels the character actor Richard Lynch and the rock star Alice Cooper to create a villain both ludicrous and shudder-worthy. And Mr. Cage uses his outsize-performance chops with remarkable focus and commitment.
The movie’s imagery is consistently unearthly; its pacing has a magisterial weight. Call it pulp Tarkovsky, maybe.
From NYT movie review.
94% on Rotten Tomatoes

watched it this morning (it's on Redbox)
it was fricking awesome. so much more of a delivery than Beyond the Black Rainbow (Which may be the biggest example of disappointment from the actual movie after trailer hype in my life)
Panos really channeled his inner Ti West in being able to get the 80s atmosphere correct

great film
I made some comments on a different thread but I hope more people watch this movie.
It's such a fricking trip.
I listen to the Many Love Theme all the time, such a pretty piece of music from a great composer,

it was a huge improvement over BtBR (which i tried to watch last week and fell asleep....again batting 3/3 there). so much better pacing and none of that arthouse slowness (For nothing more than mimicking Tarkovsky
i woke up at 530am to watch it this morning. i had studio headphones on. that was trippy. you could hear the atmosphere
i expected more (esp more gore) in the final portion, but the first 2/3 was simply awesome. the scene with Mandy and the cult was incredible

none of that arthouse slowness
However, it was crucial to set up the revenge.

agree, but i still felt the payoff was a little...lacking. i wish the duels carried some of the same creativity as the other elements of the movie, but they were pretty bland. i get that "action" isnt exactly in the directors wheelhouse, but that part of the movie let me down some.
but yeah, the scenes with the cult leader and especially the one with him and Mandy are super memorable.
big step up from Black Rainbow, and while i think the Mandy hype is little overboard, i'm def excited to see what he makes next.

I love it though. I've been trying to get all my friends to watch it

I saw it last night, I actually enjoyed Beyond the Black Rainbow more. Mainly because this movie gets a bit too Stan Versus Evil for the last hour. To me the cult and its leader were the most interesting part and by the time you're an hour in, all that mythology and build up kind of falls apart.
I'd give it a B-, still pretty cool overall.

The more I think about it the more I'm getting like a heavy metal vibe.
It's like this slow build up and then bam, shite gets heavy

Awesome I've been wanting to see this. Andrea Riseborough is probably the most underrated actress alive right now, she is completely unrecognizable from role to role.

the movie beats you over the head with how loss can change you (see: last scene), so it's not shocking that the tone has its own major change
plus, the whole 2nd half could also just be a revenge fantasy as he died

quote:it's truly crazy after Mandy's horrific death how he comes home...sees the commercial, clearly in shock and passes out, then wakes up and falls completely off the wagon(I believe he's an alcoholic right?) while going nuts in the bathroom

Crazy movie.
Beautiful to watch in terms of cinematography, but crazy.
I think I liked Rainbow more.
Still, Cosmatos makes great stuff.
